Gamers on Xbox and PC can now get a great deal on 8BitDo’s first wireless controller designed for the Xbox Series X|S. Amazon is currently offering the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode Rare 40th Anniversary Edition for $72, down from its original price of $90. Officially approved by Microsoft, this special controller includes a coordinating charging dock, a durable metal directional pad, precise Hall Effect sticks, and customizable back buttons. Released in August to honor Rare Limited, the controller features a unique blue and gold design with artwork celebrating the history of the well-known game studio, which is now part of Microsoft. While many know Rare for its recent hit, Sea of Thieves, the studio also created classic games like Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, and Perfect Dark.
This controller has only been discounted once before, during Black Friday, and it sold out quickly. If you’re looking for a high-quality alternative to the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller (currently $135, down from $200), the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-Mode 40th Anniversary Edition Controller is a great option. It connects wirelessly to Xbox, PC, Apple and Android devices, and even the Steam Deck.
Amazon is also offering discounts on various Xbox-licensed 8BitDo products, like the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard, Retro R8 Mouse, All-Button Wireless Arcade Controller, and Ultimate Bluetooth Mobile Controller.

The Ultimate Controller first came out last spring in white and black, with a see-through green version added in May to match 8BitDo’s other products. The “3-Mode” name refers to how you can connect it: wirelessly to a PC, via Bluetooth to mobile devices, or with a cable to an Xbox. The new 40th Anniversary Edition keeps all those connection options, but now also offers 2.4GHz wireless connectivity for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles. This special edition is also the only Ultimate Controller that includes a charging dock.

The new controller works with PCs, Macs, and mobile devices, making it a great option for Rare fans even if they don’t have an Xbox or prefer not to use a wireless controller. However, it doesn’t include the newest features found in 8BitDo’s high-end Ultimate 2 and Pro 3 controllers, which are currently available at a record-low price on Amazon.
The Ultimate 2 controller has been improved with customizable buttons, better analog sticks, colorful lights, and adjustable triggers. The Ultimate 3-Mode is very similar to the first Ultimate controller – still good, but not 8BitDo’s top model. PC gamers can find the Ultimate 2 on sale for $47.69, down from $60. If you have a Nintendo Switch or the new Switch 2, the Bluetooth version of the Ultimate 2 is available for $56, reduced from $70.
