The 1980s low-budget horror classic, Sleepaway Camp, is getting a remake from its original writer and director, Robert Hiltzik. While often considered a minor film of its time, Sleepaway Camp is famous for having one of the most shocking twists in horror movie history. Don’t worry, we won’t reveal it if you haven’t seen it – especially if you’re a horror fan who still doesn’t know what happened at Camp Arawak!
According to Bloody Disgusting, the script is finished for a new take on Sleepaway Camp, currently known as Sleepaway Camp 2025. The news came from production company AFA’s Instagram page. AFA is run by Kenan Thompson (of Saturday Night Live fame) and Johnny Ryan Jr. (Bill & Ted Face the Music). The post promised updates and hinted that some fans might even get a chance to visit the set during filming.

At first glance, Sleepaway Camp seems like just another typical 1980s slasher film set at a summer camp – the title itself hints at its genre. “Camp horror” was popular then, and the movie follows the usual formula. However, it stands out because of its shocking and unforgettable plot twist. This twist is so surprising that it makes up for any parts of the story that feel awkward or haven’t aged well.
The project began in September when AFA acquired the rights to the film. Hiltzik told Deadline he was excited and honored to collaborate with AFA on a reimagining of Sleepaway Camp. He’d received offers from other companies, but AFA was the only one that understood his vision and allowed him to stay true to the original film while also introducing it to a new audience. He promised fans a new character would be joining the Sleepaway Camp story.

Hiltzik is taking on a tough task with his remake of Sleepaway Camp. Because the original film’s shocking twist is so well-known – and easily found online – it’s likely audiences will discover it before even watching the new version. In today’s world, information is instantly available, and this twist is already famous, frequently appearing in online lists despite some people’s mixed feelings about the movie itself.
Without considering the big surprise ending, Sleepaway Camp still functions as a horror film, though it’s not quite as frightening. However, the director might have several clever tricks up his sleeve that we haven’t noticed yet. This new version of the slasher film could be aiming for another unexpected twist, and we’re missing it. Hopefully, whatever the director plans for the final scene, he’ll include that terrifying, snarling sound that makes the ending genuinely scary for many viewers.
