’80s Cult Classic ‘The Monster Squad’ Gathered the ‘Avengers’ of Horror and It’s Streaming Free

As a huge horror fan, I’ll always think of the ’80s as a golden age for the genre. It really started strong with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining in 1980, and ended with Brian Yuzna’s wonderfully weird Society in 1989. That decade gave us some of the most iconic horror villains ever – Jason, Freddy, Chucky, and Pinhead all burst onto the scene then. But for me, there was one project that truly felt like a dream team of horror. It’s maybe a bit much to call them the ‘Avengers’ of horror, but how else do you describe bringing together so many legends from classic horror?

The 1987 film The Monster Squad brought together a memorable group of characters and classic Universal Monsters for a thrilling and fun adventure. Now, horror fans can enjoy this iconic movie, as it’s been added to Tubi’s free streaming service.

The film slowly gained a dedicated and passionate fanbase that continues to thrive. Its devoted followers have even been the subject of documentaries, and they’ve kept the movie alive in popular culture as a daring, family-friendly adventure. It’s particularly remembered for an incredible scene – one of the most iconic moments ever in a horror film, which we’ll discuss shortly.

Horror Avengers, Assemble!

Tri-Star Pictures

The Monster Squad is about Sean Crenshaw, a young boy who leads a group of friends fascinated by horror movies. They discover a magical amulet that can control monsters and send them back to their own world. When Dracula arrives, bringing the Mummy, the Gill-man, and the Wolf Man with him, he seeks the amulet to gain power. Frankenstein’s monster also appears, but he doesn’t want to help Dracula; instead, he becomes friends with Sean’s little sister, Phoebe.

Dracula, with a team of frightening monsters, is on a mission to steal a powerful amulet and conquer the world. A group of heroes will fight back, using the notes of the famous vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing and the unexpected aid of Frankenstein’s monster, in a desperate attempt to defeat the incredibly powerful Dracula.

You Will Wish You Had a Monster Squad of Your Own

The Monster Squad is part of a great tradition of horror films from the 1980s that perfectly captured the spirit of the decade. While the ’80s are well-known for scary slasher movies, it also gave us fun, accessible horror films like Poltergeist, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, and Beetlejuice. The Monster Squad, a beloved cult classic, fits right in, offering scares that are exciting without being too frightening for younger viewers. It strikes a nice balance between horror for adults and family-friendly entertainment.

The film features a gathering of iconic horror monsters – the kind that have haunted generations of moviegoers. Nearly every classic Universal monster makes an appearance, and they’re genuinely frightening, as you can see in the clip. While a smaller version of this monster mash-up happened in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, it hadn’t been done on this scale before. Later films like Van Helsing only included a few monsters, like Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and the Wolf Man. The planned ‘Dark Universe,’ which Tom Cruise’s 2017 film The Mummy ultimately derailed, would have brought these creatures back together, but that ambitious plan never came to fruition.
