2026 looks set to be a fantastic year for new TV series. Several exciting science fiction shows are already scheduled to premiere next year, and any of them could become the next big hit. One standout is Neuromancer, based on a classic novel that was long considered impossible to adapt for the screen, but is now coming to Apple TV+.
While Neuromancer is generating a lot of buzz, it’s not the only sci-fi show coming in 2026. Next year also brings completely new series from well-known creators, revivals of beloved franchises, and exciting continuations of rising sci-fi universes. There’s a lot to be excited about, and these shows are at the top of the list of what to watch.
Neuromancer Is the Riskiest Sci-Fi Series of the Decade
Apple TV+’s highly anticipated 2026 series, Neuromancer, is based on William Gibson’s classic 1984 science fiction novel. The show blends dark, futuristic themes, a gritty cyberpunk style, and rebellious ideas into a truly original story that hasn’t been adapted for television before. It stars Callum Turner, Mark Strong, Emma Laird, and Peter Sarsgaard.
For decades, many film studios have attempted to bring the original novel to the big screen, but none have succeeded. Now, Apple TV is poised to finally deliver an adaptation that fans hope will meet their high expectations. If it’s well-executed, Neuromancer has the potential to be the science fiction event of the decade.
Blade Runner 2099 Expands Ridley Scott’s Underrated Sci-Fi World
As a huge fan of the original Blade Runner, I was thrilled to hear they’re revisiting that world! It’s been a while since Blade Runner 2049 – which I thought was amazing, even if it didn’t do huge numbers at the box office – and now it’s coming to TV. Blade Runner 2099 is a miniseries headed to Amazon Prime next year, and it sounds really intriguing. Michelle Yeoh will be playing a replicant named Olwen, and the story will apparently explore what happens when she starts thinking about her own mortality as she nears the end of her lifespan.
Prime Video hasn’t shared many details about the new Blade Runner 2099 series, but it’s expected to be different from Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. This series might be the last opportunity for the Blade Runner franchise to achieve the broad popularity it deserves. The longer, more expansive format, combined with existing fan enthusiasm, could finally unlock the key to the franchise’s success.
Lanterns Expands James Gunn’s DCU
James Gunn’s DC Universe will continue with Lanterns, a new series coming to HBO Max. Set to launch in 2026, the show focuses on two Green Lanterns: the experienced Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and the rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). They team up to solve a puzzling murder in a quiet town on Earth.
Fans of comic books have been waiting a long time for a good live-action series about the Green Lanterns, and this new show, Lanterns, aims to deliver. But it’s not just for superhero enthusiasts! Lanterns also offers engaging science fiction concepts and will bring something unique to the DC Universe. It’s a show that promises to redefine what sci-fi television can achieve, making it a must-watch event next year.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Does Something New With the Classic Franchise
The world of Star Trek continues to grow with new shows venturing into unexplored space. The latest series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, delves into the history of the school that trains all of the franchise’s iconic heroes. Set at Starfleet Academy, the show follows cadets as they prepare to become the next generation of Starfleet officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will debut on January 15, 2026.
Featuring a talented cast including Holly Hunter, Tig Notaro, and Robert Picardo reprising his role as The Doctor from Voyager, Starfleet Academy could be a fantastic addition to the Star Trek universe. The series explores a relatively untold part of Star Trek history, offering fans a fresh and exciting look at the beloved fictional world and expanding its rich story.
Doctor Who: The War Between the Land and the Sea Promises Big Things for Sci-Fi Fans
Despite recent uncertainty about the future of Doctor Who after its split with Disney+, at least one spin-off series is still in development. The War Between the Land and the Sea is a project created by Russell T. Davies, a key figure in the Doctor Who universe. This five-part miniseries will center on agents from U.N.I.T. as they try to stop a major war between humans and the aquatic creatures known as the Sea Devils.
After nearly ten years, The War Between the Land and the Sea marks a significant expansion of the Doctor Who universe. The show’s recent revival promised several new spinoffs, and this is the first glimpse of what Russell T. Davies has planned. While it’s part of a larger universe, the story also stands on its own, offering a compelling sci-fi premise that fans will enjoy.
Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Follows The Clone Wars’ Best Villain
The next animated Star Wars project is a new series called Maul: Shadow Lord. It continues the story of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, focusing on Darth Maul after the Republic falls. The series will explain what happened between events, showing how Maul eventually arrives on Malachor as seen in Star Wars: Rebels.
Darth Maul has always been a fascinating character in the Star Wars universe, often becoming a highlight whenever he appears in shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels. Now, a new project will center entirely on his story, which is incredibly exciting for fans. Shadow Lord will also appeal to science fiction enthusiasts, delving into the larger Star Wars galaxy and the Empire’s growing control.
The Boroughs Is a New Sci-Fi Show From the Duffer Brothers
The popular Netflix series Stranger Things will conclude later this year, but its creators, the Duffer Brothers, are already developing a new show. Their next project, The Boroughs, is about a group of elderly heroes who team up to stop an alien invasion – all set in what appears to be a typical retirement community.
I’m really excited about Netflix’s upcoming series, The Boroughs! They haven’t shared much detail yet, only the basic idea and that it’s coming in 2026. But knowing how brilliantly the Duffer Brothers tell stories, I have a feeling this one will be amazing. Plus, the cast is incredible – Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Alfred Molina, Clarke Peters, Alfre Woodard… it’s packed with talent! Honestly, it feels like The Boroughs could be Netflix’s biggest hit next year, and I can’t wait to see it.
Vision Quest Follows Up on the MCU’s Best Television Show
Vision Quest is a new series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It continues the story started in the popular Disney+ series WandaVision and Agatha All Along. The show will center on Paul Bettany’s character, Vision, as he tries to recover his memories and figure out his purpose.
Disney+’s Marvel shows have been inconsistent, but Vision Quest has the potential to be one of the best yet. It tackles a complex and psychological story, offering something new to a superhero landscape that often feels crowded. The series could become a truly thoughtful and engaging sci-fi show that viewers will want to rewatch.
