This show is packed with jokes, so many good ones have been overlooked over the years. For nearly 15 seasons, the animated sitcom has kept audiences laughing with the funny and relatable everyday experiences of the Belcher family. Bob, Linda, Tina, Gene, and Louise are a truly memorable family, and honestly, everyone in their quirky town of Seymour’s Bay, New Jersey, is pretty great.
Over its 16 seasons, Bob’s Burgers has delivered a huge number of hilarious jokes – everything from recurring bits to perfectly timed one-liners. The show’s humor is consistently top-notch, standing out from most other sitcoms. While some of these jokes might not be instantly memorable, they’re still incredibly clever and deserve recognition.
Linda’s Love of the Number Four
As a total movie and TV buff, I have to say Linda Belcher is just the best. She’s a wife, a mom, helps run the restaurant, and honestly, she’s the heart of everything. She’s endlessly optimistic, even if she can’t quite wrap her head around numbers – seriously, basic math is her kryptonite! There’s this hilarious episode, “I Get Psy-chic Out of You” (Season 4, Episode 16), where she thinks she’s suddenly psychic after accidentally predicting something. Turns out, she’s just really good at reading people and situations, but ask her for a number, and she’ll blurt out ‘four’ completely at random. It’s just peak Linda, and it always cracks me up.
Linda’s running gag of always answering ‘four’ – whether it makes sense or not – is a surprisingly funny and subtle joke. It’s hilarious how enthusiastic she is about everything, even though she’s usually incorrect.
Regular Sized Rudy’s Brilliant Alias
Regular Sized Rudy is a pretty ordinary kid, but he’s called that to differentiate him from a much younger, smaller Rudy at Wagstaff School. He frequently gets mixed up in adventures with the Belcher kids, usually by accident. For example, in the episode “Carpe Museum” (Season 3, Episode 22), Rudy joins Louise and the others in some mischief. When Louise pretends to be Leafy Green Briar, Rudy playfully announces he’s “Kate Bush.”
Kate Bush is a well-known English singer and songwriter, and her name has recently gained even more attention. Regular Sized Rudy deserves praise for trying to join in with Louise, and his chosen name was especially clever. Not only was his timing perfect, but the fact that Kate Bush’s name fit the situation so well made it even better.
Chuck’s Sarcastic Remarks About Bob
Even though Bob is a good person, he often struggles to make friends and frequently ends up with enemies – sometimes without even realizing how. In the Bob’s Burgers episode “Best Burger” (Season 5, Episode 5), he enters a burger contest against the famous chef Skip Marooch. Between a forgotten ingredient and his son Jimmy being a handful, Bob also has to deal with subtle, constant jabs from the competition’s host, Chuck Charles.
The Bob’s Burgers episode “Best Burger” is well-known, but Chuck’s funny lines often get overlooked. His sarcastic comment, “Hooray for Bob. He managed to somehow do what he does every day for a living. What a champion,” is surprisingly cutting, though Chuck’s delivery keeps it from being overly harsh. Another standout line, “Don’t blame Korea for your stupid burger, Bob,” is just as funny and has become a popular meme due to how absurd it is, whether you’re familiar with the show or not.
Tina’s Appreciation of the Metric System
Tina is a funny and endearing character because she acts incredibly confident, despite being socially awkward. In the Bob’s Burgers episode “Ain’t Miss Debatin'” (Season 7, Episode 15), she decides to join the debate team, where she quickly becomes fixated on Duncan, a boy from the opposing team. The team is supposed to argue against the metric system, but Tina unexpectedly argues in favor of it.
The bit about loving the metric system – and giving it a perfect score – is a surprisingly funny moment that doesn’t get enough attention. It’s understated compared to other, more famous scenes. Tina’s simple statement – a nudge for Americans to learn about the metric system – is delivered perfectly, and the humor is enhanced by the fact that her character is supposed to be against it.
However, Tina also delivered another great line: “The metric system is silly! We already have grams! They’re called grandmas, and mine lives in Florida, thank you.”
Bob’s Attempt to Contact His Family
Bob is a devoted husband and father who always puts his family first. However, when Bob needs their help, they often dismiss his requests or tease him before offering assistance. For example, in the TV episode “World Wharf II: The Wharfening (or How Bob Saves/Destroys the Town – Part II)” (Season 4, Episode 22), Bob attempts to text his family for help after becoming tied up under a pier with Mr. Fischoeder. Unfortunately, he struggles to use his hands, making his messages unreadable.
Everyone realizes Bob is being held captive, but Gene hilariously guesses, “He’s in a meeting! And he’s going to be there for a while.” This is a perfect example of the show Bob’s Burgers‘ understated and natural humor, and it’s a one-liner that often gets missed.
Gene really embodies self-assurance. He shows that even when things don’t go as planned, you can usually find a way to learn and still end up okay.
Louise’s Fashion Advice for Bob
Throughout the show, Bob has a different connection with each of his three kids, but his relationships are always built on love and respect. He often clashes with Louise, yet they share a special bond as father and daughter.
In the “Bob’s Burgers” episode “Sexy Dance Fighting” (Season 1, Episode 4), Tina starts learning capoeira, a Brazilian martial art. This frustrates Bob, but he unexpectedly gets drawn into capoeira lessons as well, taught by the instructor, Jairo.
When Bob returns to the restaurant feeling more confident and wearing a fedora, he jokes that he feels like a “pimp.” Louise’s response – “You’re gonna need a bigger hat” – is one of the show’s funniest early moments. It’s funny on its own, but also surprising to hear a young daughter say to her father. This quick, witty line perfectly showcases the clever writing that would become a hallmark of the animated sitcom.
Mr. Fischoeder’s Extreme Financial Loss
Mr. Fischoeder appears successful, but his life is actually built on a series of bad choices. He’s addicted to gambling and constantly takes huge risks, though he almost always loses.
In the “Bob’s Burgers” episode “The Kids Run the Restaurant” (Season 3, Episode 20), Mr. Fischoeder visits as the Belchers are trying to turn their basement into a casino. The space quickly starts to feel like a real casino.
One of the funniest lines from Mr. Fischoeder on Bob’s Burgers is when he says, “I once lost $30,000 on a horse. She just ran off with it.” It’s so absurd, and the way he delivers it really shows what his character is all about. Beyond being a funny story with a clever twist, it also reveals that Mr. Fischoeder tends to be impulsive and doesn’t always think things through.
Louise’s Iconic Description of Jessica
Louise often seems tough and isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but she does have a softer side that occasionally shows. She’s perfectly capable of being kind, but usually prefers to be direct and honest. A great example of this is in the episode “Slumber Party” when she gets very upset that her mom invited her classmates over without telling her. While she complains about all of them – Abby, Jessica, Harley, and Jodi – her rant about Jessica is especially memorable and funny.
One of the funniest lines from Bob’s Burgers is when Louise describes Jessica as “Bland, boring… if she were a spice, she’d be flour. If she were a book, she’d be two books.” It’s a clever comparison, and Louise’s delivery makes it even better. The joke is already funny because Louise hates sleepovers and being forced to have one at her own house is ironic. But her brutally honest opinion of Jessica and the other girls is what really elevates the whole scene.
