Prime Video has a huge and impressive collection of shows, and while many people talk about its popular titles, there are also a lot of great series that fly under the radar. Amazon has been quietly adding more and more TV shows over the years, making Prime Video a streaming service to keep an eye on. Beyond hits like Reacher, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and Fallout, you can find some hidden gems.
It’s generally easier for TV shows with big marketing campaigns or those based on popular existing stories to attract viewers. When you add in how algorithms and social media work, these shows often succeed automatically. However, Prime Video also has many fantastic shows – both original creations and acquired series – that critics love, but don’t always get the attention they deserve.
Undone (2019-2022)
Created by the same team behind BoJack Horseman, Undone is a unique animated series that mixes genres. It centers on Alma Winograd-Diaz, a 28-year-old who begins to experience time differently after a serious car accident. She uses these newfound abilities to investigate her father’s death, but her powers aren’t without consequences.
Given its original idea, striking visuals, and talented creators, it’s surprising that Undone isn’t as popular as other great animated series on Prime Video, like The Legend of Vox Machina. Undone is a real standout show, skillfully combining time travel and alternate realities with heartfelt and meaningful themes.
This science fiction show doesn’t spoon-feed its viewers. Instead, the audience experiences the story alongside the main character, Alma, and has to figure out for themselves what’s actually happening versus what might be in her head.
Batman: Caped Crusader (2024-Present)
Despite Batman’s widespread popularity, the Prime Video series Batman: Caped Crusader hasn’t gotten as much attention as it deserves. Previous Batman animated projects have become iconic because they explored more complex and mature themes than most live-action movies do.
The new show, Caped Crusader, successfully updates the Batman story while staying true to the character’s dark and serious tone. It’s particularly strong in developing the villains and giving them more depth. What really sets this series apart, though, is its focus on Batman’s detective skills – we see him solving mysteries, not just fighting crime.
The Bridge (2011-2018)
These days, shows originally made in languages other than English are very common on streaming services. But ten years ago, international TV shows generally only gained popularity in their home countries. This might be why The Bridge, starring Sofia Helin as Saga Norén, isn’t as well-known as it deserves to be on Prime Video. The story begins with a crime that takes place on the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark.
Each season of The Bridge features a new crime and introduces new characters, though Detective Saga Norén appears in all four seasons. It’s a brilliantly crafted mystery series – from the very beginning, it builds a complex story, subtly drops clues, and ultimately delivers a rewarding conclusion.
One Mississippi (2015-2017)
While plenty of dark comedy shows exist, the most memorable ones often draw from real life. A prime example is the Prime Video series One Mississippi, which is based on Tig Notaro’s personal story. The show follows Tig Bavaro (played by Tig Notaro) as she navigates life after returning to her hometown of Bay St. Louis following the death of her mother.
Inspired by real events, One Mississippi feels more genuine than many other comedies. It’s a very funny show, but it also tackles tough topics like loss, difficult family relationships, and dealing with illness. Even while facing these challenges, the main character, Tig, maintains a great sense of humor.
Dead Ringers (2023)
The Prime Video miniseries Dead Ringers is a stunning show, consistently excellent from beginning to end. Inspired by David Cronenberg’s 1988 film, it focuses on identical twin brothers, Elliot and Beverly Mantle, both played by the incredibly talented Rachel Weisz, and delves into the intricacies of their evolving bond.
What truly makes the series stand out is Rachel Weisz’s incredible performance. She convincingly portrays the twins as distinct individuals throughout this psychological thriller. Like the characters themselves, Dead Ringers isn’t afraid to take risks and doesn’t shy away from the disturbing and complex relationship between the Mantle twins. It prioritizes a raw and unsettling portrayal over softening the story for viewers.
Patriot (2015-2018)
Though it first aired over ten years ago, the show Patriot hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. This spy drama features Michael Dorman (known from For All Mankind) as John Tavner, a CIA officer who pretends to be a pipe fitter to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. At first glance, Patriot seems like a standard spy story.
At first glance, it seems simple, but Patriot is actually much deeper than that. The main character, Tavner, isn’t a suave or skilled spy; his work has left him emotionally drained and isolated. He copes by expressing his experiences through folk songs he writes and plays on his guitar. What makes the show work so well is its unique combination of quirky humor and genuine emotional weight, all while still delivering a compelling spy story.
Although the emotional difficulties of the main character are compelling, the show still delivers the excitement you’d expect from a spy thriller. Sadly, Patriot was cancelled after just two seasons because not enough people were watching, but fans are still hoping it will be brought back.
Humans (2015-2018)
Science fiction series are incredibly popular on streaming services right now, often even surpassing fantasy shows in viewership. However, some important sci-fi shows don’t always get the attention they deserve. One example is Humans, which premiered on AMC in 2015. It’s set in a world very similar to our own, but with highly advanced, human-like robots called Synths commonly used in homes.
Even though Humans first aired over a decade ago, its themes feel incredibly relevant today, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence. The show delves into the complicated connection between people and lifelike robots, questioning what truly defines humanity and how technology is changing the way we connect with one another.
Tales From The Loop (2020)
Prime Video launched the sci-fi series Tales From the Loop in April 2020, and while it initially seemed promising, it didn’t gain much traction. The show received positive reviews when it first came out, but it was soon largely overlooked. Based on the art book of the same name by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, Tales From the Loop features the unusual stories of people living in the town of Mercer, Ohio.

The people in this show are all linked in some way, though the connections aren’t obvious at first. Tales From the Loop proves that fresh, creative stories are the best approach, even if they don’t always become hugely popular. The fact that the Prime Video show didn’t reach a massive audience doesn’t diminish its quality or importance.
