The new Star Wars-inspired game drew in a large player base, but the Renegades expansion is getting somewhat mixed reactions on Steam. While it’s a significant improvement over the previous, poorly received update, it’s not universally loved.
Destiny 2 received a new expansion called Renegades on December 2nd. While it shares some similarities with previous expansions, it’s unique in its inspiration – drawing heavily from the Star Wars universe. Don’t expect to visit the Star Wars galaxy or meet Jedi and stormtroopers, though! Instead, you’ll find yourself in a dangerous, lawless region called the Frontier, where criminal groups are fighting for control. As a renegade, you can get involved… if you’re willing to work for a price.
Man, this new DLC really got people hyped! As soon as Renegades dropped, over 71,000 of us were playing Destiny 2 at the same time, just on Steam! That’s the biggest player count we’ve seen since July, which is awesome. It’s not quite as huge as the launch days of some older expansions, though – except for Rite of the Nine, that one was a bit quieter too.
Good expansion, Destiny 2 not necessarily?
Player reviews on Steam are raising concerns, not just about the new downloadable content, but also about the original game, Renegades. Currently, only 61% of the 761 users who’ve rated it recommend it. While the story campaign is generally considered enjoyable, with some highlights, many players are disappointed by the amount of content included. This is similar to the issues players had with the Edge of Fate release, which featured fewer dungeons and raids (only one of each instead of two) and no Strikes at all.
As a fan, I’ve heard a lot of people saying that Renegades is a huge step up from the original! Everyone seems to agree the story is fantastic and the gameplay is way better. Plus, some of us have been digging into the game’s code and it looks like there might be some really cool stuff coming in the future, which is super exciting!
Player opinions of the core game reveal a lot about how they’re feeling. Over the past month, Destiny 2 has received over 2,100 reviews, but only 48% of them are positive. This is partially due to the game being removed from sale in countries like Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus because of legal issues.
Despite the recent updates, many players are frustrated with how Bungie is developing the game. Even those who generally enjoy it suggest waiting for sales before buying Destiny 2 or its expansions, and you’ll often see comments along those lines.
Do I love it, yes, do I hate it, yes. Will I return? Unfortunately, yes.
A number of Steam players, and others, think Bungie should stop working on Destiny 2 and start a new game in the series. However, recent news indicates that a third game is likely a long way off.
