Even though John Wick might be gone in the movies, everyone’s still obsessed with the series! I’m thrilled to see three of them doing so well on HBO Max, especially the one from 2019. It just proves how much people love these films.
According to FlixPatrol, as of January 7th, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is the eighth most popular movie on HBO Max in the US. This makes it the lowest-ranked of the three John Wick films currently streaming on the platform. John Wick is currently at No. 2, behind One Battle After Another, which has been No. 1 for the last week. John Wick: Chapter 2 is also performing well, landing at No. 5.
When the first John Wick movie came out in 2014, it unexpectedly became a big success at the box office, earning $86 million worldwide and receiving good reviews. Because of this, Lionsgate quickly made a sequel, which was released in 2017 and proved to be even more popular with both audiences and critics.
The John Wick series truly hit its stride with Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Building directly on the story from Chapter 2, this third film had a larger budget and followed Keanu Reeves as John Wick became a hunted man after breaking the rules of the High Table. Chad Stahelski returned as director, and the screenplay was a collaborative effort by Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams.
Chapter 3 – Parabellum quickly became a box office success, surpassing all previous films in the series within just 10 days. By the end of its time in theaters, the action-packed sequel had earned $327.7 million around the world.
Is John Wick Dead?
Similar to the ending of Chapter 2, Chapter 3 – Parabellum left audiences wondering what would happen next, with John Wick determined to get revenge on the High Table. That story continued in John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023. Although Wick achieved his revenge, the movie ended with his death.
Okay, so after Chapter 4 came out, Lionsgate and Chad Stahelski are clearly thinking about what’s next. If they do another John Wick movie, it looks like they’d have to explain how John survived the ending of the last one! Another cool idea I’ve heard is that they could go the prequel route, like the Ballerina spin-off they’ve got planned for 2025 – that one’s set between Chapters 3 and 4, and it could be a really interesting way to expand the universe.
Even if John Wick remains deceased, the film series will continue. “Ballerina” was the first of at least two planned spinoffs set within the same cinematic world. The second will center on Caine, continuing his story from the scene after the credits of the 2023 movie.
A new animated movie is being made that tells the story of a difficult mission John Wick completed to earn his freedom from the High Table. Keanu Reeves will once again provide the voice for John Wick in the film.
