Many of the greatest TV shows feature characters we absolutely love to hate. Whether they’re frustrating heroes or villains who commit truly awful acts, these despicable characters are often a key part of what makes a show memorable. In fact, even the best series wouldn’t be as impactful without characters that viewers love to root against.
TV dramas are constantly changing, and lately, many shows are pushing characters into increasingly dark and disturbing situations. While some characters become truly monstrous villains fueled by intense anger, others simply become incredibly irritating – the kind of characters that make viewers want to mute the TV. It’s not always about evil; sometimes, it’s just about being unbelievably annoying.
Carrie Bradshaw Is One of the Most Hated Female Characters In TV
Sex and the City has many fans, but one character, Carrie, often receives a lot of criticism. A major reason for this dislike seems to be her self-centeredness. Carrie tends to focus on her own life and feelings, which makes her a difficult friend and partner.
Carrie often failed to show up for the people in her life, and while it didn’t make her a terrible person, it was difficult to feel sympathetic towards her. A prime example is how she didn’t support Samantha during her battle with breast cancer, but that was just one instance of many.
Gregory Was The Walking Dead’s Most Gutless Traitor
In a world overrun by zombies, being weak is a major disadvantage. Gregory from The Walking Dead was a flawed leader of the Hilltop Colony, but his intelligence allowed him to maintain control. While he did keep the community alive after the apocalypse, his flaws ultimately overshadowed his contributions. He simply wouldn’t have survived on his own and constantly needed others to protect him from walkers.
Gregory was a truly awful person – not only was he dishonest, but his ambition and arrogance caused him to betray Rick’s group to Negan and the Survivors. Even after Maggie became leader of Hilltop, he tried to have her killed. When finally held accountable for his actions, he acted like a pathetic coward, begging for mercy he hadn’t earned. While there have been many unlikeable characters, Gregory stands out as the most despicable.
Breaking Bad Is Full of Monsters, but None Worse Than Todd
Compared to Walter White from Breaking Bad, Todd Alquist is a truly terrifying villain. Initially appearing harmless, Todd quickly proved to be unpredictable and dangerous. He showed a shocking disregard for life, demonstrated by his cold-blooded murder of a young witness and his subsequent kidnapping of Jesse Pinkman. He cruelly exploited Jesse’s emotional connection to Andrea and her son, Brock, to force him to continue cooking methamphetamine.
When Jesse attempted to flee, Todd murdered Andrea and warned he’d harm Brock if Jesse tried again. What made it even worse was Todd’s complete lack of conscience; he felt no guilt or regret. Despite having some semblance of values, Todd was so emotionally detached that he simply acted on impulse, without considering the repercussions of his actions.
Pete Campbell Is Mad Men’s Most Despicable Character
It’s a strong statement to say any Mad Men character was the worst, considering how flawed almost everyone at Sterling Cooper Draper Price was. But Peter Campbell’s behavior throughout the series was particularly awful. Beyond his affair with Peggy right before his wedding, he was consistently unfaithful and pursued inappropriate relationships without remorse.
Campbell’s sense of privilege caused him to act badly. For example, he stole a package meant for Don, took it home, and read it, all in an attempt to get Don in trouble by revealing details about his past. This cowardly act ultimately failed and only reinforced the image of Campbell as a spoiled, arrogant man who expected everything to be handed to him.
Benjamin Linus’s Moral Ambiguity Made Lost Fans Despise Him
Throughout most of the TV show Lost, Linus was a selfish character, but viewers surprisingly enjoyed disliking him. Just when audiences began to feel sympathy or hope that he might change for the better, he’d inevitably commit an even worse act, ensuring his continued status as a villain.
Linus was a truly terrifying villain. He manipulated John Locke, convincing him not to end his life, only to murder him moments later and make it look like suicide. He even sacrificed his own daughter – a child he’d taken from her mother – because he was unwilling to relinquish his control of the island. Though he committed countless murders and rightfully earned the audience’s disdain, viewers were strangely captivated by his unpredictable cruelty and eager to see what he would do next.
Livia Soprano Was a Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing
While many mothers can be annoying, Livia Soprano is truly awful, and fans of The Sopranos really dislike her. She pretends to be a frail, elderly grandmother, but it’s all an act. Livia is incredibly skilled at manipulating people, using guilt trips and feigned helplessness to get her way. What’s most disturbing is that her children recognize this behavior, but they don’t fully understand how truly malicious she is.
Livia was always secretly plotting against Tony, even going so far as to try and have her own son killed and framing him for crimes. She did all this because she was angry about being sent to a nursing home. Many viewers think she pretended to have Alzheimer’s to avoid facing the consequences of her actions, though early on, she sometimes seemed genuinely confused. Livia Soprano is a terrible mother, but her ruthless schemes make her a fascinating character for fans.
Ramsay Bolton Is the Most Hated TV Character of All Time
While Game of Thrones featured many terrible characters, some were more monstrous than others. Joffrey Baratheon and his mother, Cersei Lannister, were easy to despise, lacking any positive traits. However, Ramsay Bolton, Roose Bolton’s illegitimate son, was truly horrifying. He was a sadistic monster who delighted in inflicting pain and playing cruel psychological games. Before Ramsay, Theon Greyjoy was a clear villain, but Ramsay broke him so completely that viewers almost forgot why they originally disliked him.
Honestly, as a big fan of the show, there were moments that were just… too much. The way Ramsay Bolton treated Sansa Stark was genuinely horrifying, and it actually made me consider stopping watching – it felt like the show was actually rewarding his terrible actions. And beyond that, he was just pure evil. Killing his own father and feeding his stepmother and baby brother to dogs? That’s monstrous. But the worst, for me, was Rickon. Sending him running, pretending to give him a chance, and then… shooting him down while Jon and Sansa were forced to watch? That was a truly sickening scene, and it almost ruined the whole series for me.
Seeing Sansa force Ramsay Bolton to be eaten by his own dogs was incredibly satisfying – perhaps more so than almost anything else that happened in Game of Thrones, and that really says something.
