$7 Billion Action Franchise’s New Sequel Reportedly Nowhere Near Production & Is Getting Massive Cuts

Recently, there was some talk about the next – and supposedly last – installment in the Fast & Furious series, but it seems that announcement might have come too soon. A new report suggests that the project has been put on hold, and even faces financial difficulties – meaning the movie’s budget might need to be lowered, or more funding secured, to get it back on track.

The future of the franchise has been uncertain since Fast X didn’t perform well financially, largely due to its extremely high production costs which worried Universal. Adding to the tension, Vin Diesel publicly expressed a desire to refocus the series on its roots – family and street racing – after some of the increasingly outlandish storylines in recent films. This has created some instability around the production. Now, Universal is reportedly asking that the budget for Fast 11 be reduced by $140 million compared to Fast X.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Universal Pictures has told the creators of Fast 11 that they must keep the budget at $200 million or the film won’t be made. Initially, when Fast X was planned as two movies, the estimated cost for Part 2 was about $250 million. This means the filmmakers still need to find another $50 million in cuts, even using that original estimate.

The report also indicates that, contrary to what Vin Diesel has said, there isn’t a script for the movie yet, and most of the actors haven’t been asked to be in Fast 11. Because of budget problems with the film, it’s probable that either some major stars will be removed from the cast, or some planned filming locations will need to be cancelled to reduce costs. Interestingly, this situation actually supports Diesel’s desire for a more straightforward movie, as it may become a practical requirement rather than just something he wants.
