The number 67 has unexpectedly become a popular term in everyday language. It gained prominence from rapper Skrilla’s song ‘Doot Doot (67)’ and was even chosen as Dictionary.com’s Word of the Year in 2025.
Most other two-digit numbers didn’t show any noticeable pattern during that time, suggesting that 67 is unique. Researchers believe 67 highlights how quickly new ideas and language spread globally as younger generations become more connected.
6-7 ‘banished’ as word for new year
However, as 2026 arrived, the phrase was added to Lake Superior State University’s yearly list of words to avoid – their 50th annual “Banished Words” list.
The ‘Banished Words’ list highlights terms people are tired of hearing. This year, ’67’ came out on top, followed by ‘Cooked’ and ‘Gifted’ both making the top ten.
LSSU President David Travis explained that people are puzzled by the trend, unsure of its origins or purpose. He compared it to last year’s decision to stop using the word ‘skibidi,’ calling it simply a cultural moment.
The number of entries for this particular item was so high, they joked it could have filled the entire list. They estimated that even just positions six and seven could have been dedicated to it.
Lake Superior State University reported that parents and guardians were the main advocates for adding ‘Cooked’ to the list, though some believe the change doesn’t go far enough.
People commented that the word ‘Gifted’ was being used as a verb, not just a noun. Someone also pointed out that it had been considered for inclusion as far back as 1994.
