The star and creators of have just set a new project together.
Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar created the German-language Netflix series Dark, which debuted in 2017 and quickly gained popularity for its complex and intriguing storyline. The show concluded after three seasons in 2020, and the creators followed it up with the briefly-running series 1899. Now, Friese and Odar are starting a new project.
According to Variety, Lisa Vicari—best known for her role as Martha Nielsen in Dark—is teaming up with Jantje Friese and Baran Odar for a new HBO Max series. They will be adapting Struwwelpeter, a classic German children’s book from 1845 written by Heinrich Hoffmann. The currently untitled show will center on a federal investigator who investigates ritual murders based on the ten frightening stories in Hoffmann’s book.
I’m so excited for this new show! It’s being described as a really intense thriller, but it’s also got a lot of family drama mixed in, and it seems like it’s going to really make you think about what people deserve and whether they can ever truly be forgiven. The best news? They’ve actually started filming, though we don’t know when it’ll actually come out yet!

While Hoffman’s original stories center on children, the upcoming series will be told with adult actors. The first story, also called “Struwwelpeter,” is about a boy named Peter who doesn’t take care of his appearance and is ostracized because of it. “Struwwelpeter” literally means “Shockheaded Peter.”
The second story, titled “The Story of Wicked Frederick,” centers around a boy who is cruel to both animals and people. After Frederick is bitten by a dog and confined to bed, the dog begins eating his meals. The remaining eight stories are equally grim, and each one explores themes of right and wrong and the repercussions of bad behavior.
While we haven’t heard about the rest of the cast for the upcoming Struwwelpeter adaptation, I’ve been keeping tabs on actress Vicari, and she’s been incredibly busy since Dark wrapped up. I recently saw her in season two of Apple TV’s Hijack, where she played Clara Berger, and she also starred in the charming German rom-com Isi & Ossi. She’s definitely proving her range!
The creators of the canceled HBO Max series 1899, Jantje Friese and Baran odar, are now moving on to a new project. 1899, a slow-paced science fiction show that premiered in early 2023, was intended to run for three seasons, much like their previous hit Dark. However, it didn’t attract enough viewers to warrant continuing the story.
With a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Dark is still one of Netflix’s most popular original series, so anticipation is high for their new adaptation of Struwwelpeter. Given that actor Vicari is involved, many believe Friese and Odar can recreate the success of Dark with this new project.
