Jim Carrey has enjoyed a remarkably successful and diverse career spanning several decades. He became a major movie star in the 1990s and remained popular through the 2000s, though he began making fewer films in the 2010s. His movies have earned over $6 billion worldwide, a fitting total for such a vibrant personality.
What’s really remarkable about Jim Carrey’s success is that he achieved so much without relying on established franchises. While he did participate in some franchise films like Batman Forever and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, his biggest hits, Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber, were original ideas. Interestingly, those original films spawned sequels that weren’t as well-received. A more recent franchise he’s involved with, however, has been getting better over the past six years.
The Sonic Movies Have Kept Getting Better & Jim Carrey Is The Main Villain
In 2020, Jim Carrey unexpectedly took on a major role, playing the villain Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog. He reprised the role in the sequels released in 2022 and 2024, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 allowed him to play a dual role.
Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Robotnik is a standout in all three Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Instead of relying on his comedic talent for simple profits, the series continues to improve with each new film, which is clear from both positive reviews and strong box office numbers.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie received a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned $319 million globally. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 improved its score to 69% and added $86 million to the franchise’s box office total. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the most successful film yet, achieving an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score and bringing in $492 million worldwide.
It’s unusual for a movie series to consistently improve with each installment, but the Sonic films have done just that, both in terms of critical reception and how well they perform in theaters. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Robotnik is a highlight – he’s become more and more like the character from the video games with each film. Seeing him play two different versions of Eggman in Sonic 3, alongside the introduction of Shadow, was a particularly fun part of the movie.
The Sonic Movie Franchise Will Continue In 2027
The success of the Sonic movies will really be tested in 2027 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on March 11th. Paramount has officially announced the date, and the film is expected to be the most popular one yet, potentially leading into a mysterious new Sonic movie planned for 2028.
As a big movie fan, I’ve learned that just because a sequel is bigger doesn’t automatically make it better – especially with franchises. But I’m actually feeling optimistic about Sonic 4. The fact they’re adding Amy Rose and Metal Sonic is really cool, and honestly, the way interest in these Sonic movies has grown over the last six years makes me think a lot of us are going to be checking out the fourth one when it comes out next year. It feels like they’re on the right track!
If the next Sonic movie keeps being enjoyable while also tackling more complex stories and ideas, both critics and audiences might agree it’s the best one so far—even if Jim Carrey doesn’t return. If he does come back, he’ll likely remain a key reason for the Sonic the Hedgehog series’ continued success.
