6 Years Later, a Forgotten Stephen King Series Is Now Streaming on Netflix

After being largely forgotten for seven years, this series is making a comeback. Stephen King continues to be a major force in horror films and television, with recent successes like IT: Welcome to Derry and The Long Walk joining the long list of popular adaptations of his work. Now, audiences have a chance to discover this hidden gem.

The horror series, which premiered on Hulu in 2018, takes viewers into the world of Stephen King, set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. Created by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, the show includes characters fans of King’s work will recognize, brought to life by a talented cast featuring André Holland, Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy, Lizzy Caplan, Tim Robbins, Sissy Spacek (from Carrie), and Bill Skarsgård, who played Pennywise.

Good news for horror fans and Stephen King enthusiasts! Both seasons of Castle Rock are now streaming on Netflix. This is perfect timing, especially after the surprising conclusion of IT: Welcome to Derry. You can find a description of Castle Rock below…

This psychological horror series, inspired by the world of Stephen King, blends grand, mythical storytelling with deeply personal character studies. It’s an expansive tale of good versus evil, all unfolding within a small area of Maine’s forests.

‘Castle Rock’ Is a Stephen King Adaptation Like No Other

Hulu

The first season of Castle Rock follows Henry Deaver, a lawyer who defends people facing the death penalty. It’s filled with references to Stephen King’s stories and settings, like Shawshank Prison and the special ability called ‘shine.’ The second season tells the story of a young Annie Wilkes, the frightening character famously portrayed by Kathy Bates in Misery. While not a direct adaptation of any single story, Castle Rock is a fantastic and scary tribute to Stephen King’s work, making it essential viewing for his fans.

Despite initial praise and strong ratings – 88% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – Hulu canceled Castle Rock in 2020, and it’s largely been forgotten. This is somewhat unexpected, considering the show drew from many of Stephen King’s stories, giving creators Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason ideas for several seasons.

As a huge movie and TV fan, one of the things I really appreciate is a good, connected story. That’s exactly what we aimed for with this show. Each season is designed to stand on its own, but we always envisioned a larger universe – a kind of shared world built by Stephen King – running underneath everything. I think people who loved the first season will notice little connections and surprises in the second. And as we move into Season 3, my hope is that it will all come together, revealing that there was a bigger plan in place from the very beginning, and that everything is truly connected.

With its performance on Netflix, is it possible the Stephen King anthology series, Castle Rock, could continue on other streaming platforms?
