Black Phone 2

After the success of the 2021 film The Black Phone, a sequel felt likely. However, the villain, known as “The Grabber,” died at the end of the first movie. To bring Ethan Hawke back, the filmmakers created a story inspired by A Nightmare on Elm Street, reimagining The Grabber as a Freddy Krueger-like figure who haunts the dreams of Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) and Finney Blake (Mason Thames). This sequel stands out with its unique and unsettling dream sequences, something rarely seen in mainstream horror. Considering it earned four times its production budget and continues to be successful, it’s possible we’ll see this dream-invading villain return in another installment.

The Smashing Machine

Benny Safdie, 123 minutes

Dwayne Johnson delivers a standout performance in this unique biopic, telling the story of MMA pioneer Mark Kerr. The film, inspired by a documentary of the same name, avoids typical sports movie clichés and focuses on a man who hasn’t received the recognition he deserves for helping create a now-popular sport. Johnson portrays Kerr as a quiet, troubled individual, and his complicated relationship with his girlfriend, Dawn (Emily Blunt), only adds to his struggles. While not flawless, the film has the potential to gain a dedicated following, so it’s worth watching before everyone starts talking about it.

Good Fortune

Aziz Ansari, 97 minutes

It’s becoming clear that people prefer to watch comedies at home rather than in theaters, and that likely contributed to the disappointing performance of this genuinely funny movie. The film stars a wonderful Keanu Reeves as a guardian angel who loses his wings when he accidentally switches bodies with his former boss (Seth Rogen), now played by Aziz Ansari. While it might not be the funniest movie you see this year, Ansari, Rogen, Keke Palmer, and especially Reeves are all delightful, and this charming take on It’s a Wonderful Life deserves a second chance – give it a watch!

Roofman

Derek Cianfrance, 126 minutes

Despite being widely liked, Channing Tatum hasn’t quite become a consistent box office draw. His latest film, a well-received October dramedy inspired by the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, didn’t perform as well as hoped in theaters. The movie features Tatum as a man who hides out in a toy store after escaping prison, and boasts a strong supporting cast including Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, and Peter Dinklage. Many believe it will find a larger audience now that it’s available for rental and purchase at home, and Tatum deserves the success.

November 14

One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson, 162 minutes

The year’s most celebrated film, and a strong contender for Oscars, will be available to rent or buy digitally (PVOD) until 2025. If you want to experience the story of Perfidia Beverly Hills and its memorable characters, created by a brilliant director, you’ll need to watch it digitally. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and a fantastic cast, this unique film explores themes of revolution, friendship, and family. It’s a movie everyone will be discussing, and it’s crucial for understanding the year in film – even if you don’t end up loving it.
