Here are six Netflix shows that are consistently excellent—every episode is a winner! Many “best of Netflix” lists feature shows that are still being made, but if you want a series that’s amazing from beginning to end, these are great choices.
It’s tough for any TV show to maintain its quality consistently over many seasons. Eventually, most long-running series will have a season or storyline that feels rushed or uninspired – some fans even jokingly refer to this as a ‘gas leak year’ for the show Community. That’s why you’ll mostly find shows here that were consistently excellent throughout their entire run.
A Series Of Unfortunate Events (2017-2019)
The TV series A Series of Unfortunate Events doesn’t get nearly enough recognition for being a remarkably faithful and well-done adaptation of Daniel Handler’s (Lemony Snicket) books. The show is beautifully made and features a truly talented cast, bringing the unfortunate adventures of the Baudelaire children to life with a unique blend of darkness and humor.
Featuring a fantastic cast including Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, Patrick Warburton as the narrator, and stars like Will Arnett, Cobie Smulders, and Nathan Fillion, A Series of Unfortunate Events is full of talented actors. Their performances make the show’s wild story believable, exciting, and genuinely suspenseful.
The series consists of 13 books and the TV show has 25 episodes, so roughly two episodes cover each book. This allows for a thorough adaptation of the story, with each two-episode block feeling like a complete short film. The show offers a great blend of mystery, humor, and excitement that appeals to both children and adults.
Castlevania (2017-2021)
The animated show Castlevania is based on the popular video game series. Set in the made-up country of Wallachia, the four-season show features mature themes and plenty of action. It starts with a tragic event: the people of Târgoviște burn a young woman named Lisa, believing she’s a witch.
The villagers are unaware that Lisa was actually the beloved wife of Vlad Dracula Tepes, a tremendously powerful vampire. Driven by vengeance, Dracula announces he will slaughter every person in Wallachia after a year, setting off a terrifying countdown that threatens even the innocent inhabitants of the region.
Dracula’s only real opponent is Trevor Belmont, the last of a legendary family dedicated to hunting monsters. The animated series is visually stunning – few shows compare. But it’s more than just beautiful animation; Castlevania tells a compelling and exciting story about getting revenge and finding justice.
Russian Doll (2019-2022)
Russian Doll is a clever comedy series, similar to the movie Groundhog Day, created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler. The show stars Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov, a software engineer who keeps reliving her 36th birthday party in New York City.
The show follows Nadia as she repeatedly dies and relives the same party over and over, trying to solve a mystery. The second season takes a wild turn: Nadia finds herself transported back in time, inhabiting her mother’s body while she’s pregnant. It sounds complicated, but Russian Doll manages to keep the story surprisingly clear, humorous, and easy to follow.
Lyonne is both incredibly funny and convincingly dramatic. The show is bold and original, always choosing an unexpected path to unravel its intriguing story. While the first season had a satisfying conclusion, the second season was even more impressive.
Dark (2017-2020)
The German sci-fi series Dark is widely considered one of the best of the last ten years. Set in the town of Winden, Germany, the show follows the disappearance of several children and how their families uncover a dark and complex conspiracy involving time travel.
The show Dark features a complex, multi-generational conspiracy that jumps between different timelines, with many characters portrayed by various actors. It’s packed with surprising twists, misleading clues, and mysteries that unfold over several seasons. What sets Dark apart from other mystery series is that it ultimately provides answers to all of its questions.
Few TV shows, especially those involving time travel or mysteries, are as well-made and rewarding as Dark. The series neatly ties up almost every loose end, avoiding pointless questions and providing smart answers to the ones that matter. Each episode is intensely moody, genuinely scary, and brilliantly crafted.
Mindhunter (2017-2019)

The critically acclaimed crime drama Mindhunter is based on the 1995 non-fiction book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. The series tells the story of how the FBI developed its Behavioral Science Unit, which went on to pioneer the practice of criminal profiling, especially when investigating serial killers.
Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany play FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, who investigate serial killers in prison. Their goal is to understand what makes these criminals tick, hoping to use that knowledge to predict future murderers. They travel the country interviewing notorious killers – many of whom you’ve likely seen featured in true crime documentaries.
The actors in this show are remarkably well-cast, not just in appearance, but also in how they portray the real-life criminals’ unique behaviors and voices. Each episode of Mindhunter is compelling, and powerfully depicts the slow, unsettling impact the investigation has on Ford and Tench as they confront the darkness within these individuals.
Kingdom (2019-2021)
The South Korean series Kingdom, about a zombie outbreak, is consistently excellent from beginning to end. It’s a fast-paced and clever show that you can easily binge-watch. The story is set in a fictionalized version of Korea during the early 1600s, in a time period similar to medieval Joseon.
Lee Chang, the Crown Prince of Joseon, faces a dangerous situation. His stepmother, Queen Consort Cho, is trying to replace him with her own child. At the same time, a terrifying zombie outbreak is spreading across the country, turning people into the undead and threatening the kingdom.
Kingdom is a visually stunning and unique show. Even without sound, the series’ beautiful textures, colors, costumes, and sets would make it exceptional. But what truly makes Netflix’s Kingdom stand out is its captivating political intrigue, compelling characters, and consistently thrilling horror elements.
