50. The Walking Dead
- Release date: October 31, 2010
- Genre: Horror
- Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies
- How long is it? 11 Seasons (177 episodes)
Main Topic: After waking up from a coma, police officer Rick Grimes discovers that the world is in the midst of an unrelenting zombie outbreak. He then embarks on a journey to locate his loved ones and find a means for them to endure these challenging times.
We found it compelling: Despite its late arrival and somewhat disappointing finale for this groundbreaking series, The Walking Dead significantly transformed the zombie genre. It offered intricate and unique characters, poignant emotional journeys that truly tugged at our heartstrings, and a continuous struggle between humility and survival. For a while, it stood out as one of the most gripping and raw shows on TV, so its subpar ending can be overlooked.

49. Normal People
- Release date: April 26, 2020
- Genre: Drama

- How long is it? 1 Season (12 episodes)

The reason we’re captivated: Adapted from Sally Rooney’s equally enchanting 2018 novel, Normal People is a visually striking television series that masterfully balances the heartbreak and the hopefulness of love. Characters Connell and Marianne are intricate, imperfect individuals who captivate and confound in equal measure. Actors Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones perfectly embody their roles, delivering tender, subtle performances that catapulted them both into stardom.

48. Invincible
- Release date: March 25, 2021
- Genre: Action-adventure
- Cast: Steven Yeun, JK Simmons, Sandrah Oh, Walton Goggins
- How long is it? 3 seasons (20 episodes)
The Gist of It: Mark Grayson, a seemingly ordinary teenager, hides an extraordinary secret – invincibility, both physically and metaphorically. Using his powers, he teams up with Earth’s other superheroes to safeguard the planet from villains and extraterrestrial threats. However, the greatest danger might be lurking closer to our hero than he suspects.
Reason for Enjoyment: Praised by a fellow critic as the finest superhero series ever, Invincible is a captivating fusion of excessive violence, youthful antics, and familiar superhero tropes. While the show delights in brutal mayhem, what truly makes it an engaging spectacle isn’t its gory spectacle but rather its richly developed characters and heartfelt relationships.

47. Still Game
- Release date: September 6, 2002 – March 28, 2019
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Ford Kiernan, Greg Hemphill, Paul Riley, Jane McCarry, Mark Cox, Sanjeev Kohli, Gavin Mitchell
- How long is it? 9 seasons (62 episodes)
Title Overview: This renowned Scottish sitcom delves into the everyday lives of Jack and Victor, two old widowers residing in a downtrodden district of Glasgow. They frequent the local pub, spend their retirement funds on gambling or shopping at the nearby store, and engage in banter and laughter within their high-rise apartments.
What draws us to it: “Iconic” barely captures its essence: on Scotland’s west coast, Still Game is more than just a TV show; it’s a deeply ingrained cultural phenomenon. The comedians donning aged makeup could easily seem like a novelty act, but they manage to embody their characters so convincingly – amidst the laughter and profanities, there’s an unexpected undercurrent of authenticity that leaves you feeling emotionally invested. Its revival in the late 2010s was met with skepticism, but the final episode left me feeling strangely wistful; it felt like witnessing a farewell I didn’t want to accept. “They’ll remember where we were.

46. Nathan For You
- Release date: February 28, 2013
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Nathan Fielder
- How long is it? 4 Seasons (32 episodes)
The show, titled “Nathan for You,” is a bit tricky to summarize. Here’s how the host/star, Nathan Fielder, puts it during the opening credits: “I am Nathan Fielder, an alumnus of one of Canada’s top business schools with impressive grades. I’m now applying my business skills to assist struggling small business owners in navigating this competitive market. This is Nathan for You.
What makes it appealing: Nathan for You brilliantly encompasses three distinct elements. Initially, it resembles Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay, as Nathan attempts to assist struggling businesses. However, unlike Ramsay, his advice often leads to absurd business practices, creating a hilarious comedic twist. The satirical comedy is further enhanced by the character of Nathan, an awkward individual who undergoes personal growth throughout 32 episodes, transforming significantly over four seasons. This transformation results in poignant, heartfelt scenes toward the end, although it’s debatable whether Nathan is genuinely evolving or simply manipulating our emotions.

45. Sherlock
- Release date: July 25 2010 – January 15 2017
- Genre: Crime
- Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin freeman, Mark Gatiss
- How long is it? 4 Seasons (13 episodes)
A contemporary, chic reimagining of Sherlock Holmes’ (and John Watson’s) most thrilling escapades.
Reason for liking it: The series that sparked countless Tumblr accounts, ‘Sherlock’ was sharp, slightly seductive, and incredibly captivating. Though the quality may have dipped in later seasons (the secret sister plotline felt overly dramatic to me), one cannot deny its impact during its prime and even at its weakest moments, it remained mesmerizing television. More than that, it arguably catapulted Benedict Cumberbatch into stardom and altered Hollywood’s landscape forever. Conversations of a revival are still ongoing…

44. True Detective
- Release date: January 12, 2014
- Genre: Crime/Drama
- How long is it? 4 seasons (30 episodes)
The main subject: Two detectives from Louisiana delve into a chilling murder mystery that spans several decades, causing feelings of unease, delivering powerful monologues, and creating one of TV’s most impressive single-take scenes.
What makes it stand out: The opening chapter of True Detective didn’t just set a new standard for crime dramas – it tore down the existing one and constructed an innovative masterpiece instead. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey gave outstanding performances, Nic Pizzolatto’s writing was razor-precise, and Cary Fukunaga’s direction was captivatingly mesmerizing. Unfortunately, Season 2 didn’t meet expectations, but Seasons 3 and 4 were quite impressive.

43. The Last of Us
- Release date: January 15, 2023 – present
- Genre: Horror
- Cast: Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna
- How long is it? 1 season (9 episodes)
Main Topic: Following a devastating, beastly fungal outbreak that leaves America as a wild and barren landscape years later, Joel is assigned the job of guiding Ellie across the nation in search of a remedy.
We appreciate The Last of Us because it managed something extraordinary – it successfully adapted one of the best games ever made with both reverence and style, reaching emotionally powerful heights that place certain episodes alongside unforgettable classics like ‘Ozymandias’ and ‘Pine Barrens’. Remarkably, the series is only getting better as Season 2 will adapt Part II, a story widely considered to be the best ever in video games. As the saying goes, “When all seems lost, look for the light.

In a Nutshell: The story revolves around BoJack Horseman, a once-popular, now struggling horse-human, who yearns for a return to fame amidst the dramatically altered landscape of Hollywood. His journey involves a significant struggle as he maneuvers through this new era.
BoJack Horseman offers a humorous take on what Gob from Arrested Development might be like as an animated horse. However, unlike a traditional sitcom, it delves into serious and tender themes, making it more than just a comedy.

41. Fawlty Towers
- Release date: September 19, 1975
- Genre: Comedy

- How long is it? 2 Seasons (12 episodes)
Title Overview: Basil Fawlty manages a hotel in Torquay, where he’s perpetually locked in conflicts with his bothersome spouse, a puzzled waitstaff member, and peculiar guests who have an assortment of diverse demands and expectations.
What makes it appealing: Written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, Fawlty Towers stands as the epitome of a well-crafted situation comedy. Each episode is meticulously written and flawlessly acted, reminiscent of a masterful stage farce with impeccable timing. The series draws inspiration from an experience Cleese had during his stay with the Python group in Torquay, and Basil Fawlty is one of the most memorable comedy characters ever created. He’s a tragic figure, striving for grandeur but often thwarted by circumstances, those around him, and his own ego, vanity, pride, and snobbery.

40. Andor
- Release date: September 21, 2022 – present
- Genre: Sci-fi
- Cast: Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Genevieve O’Reilly
- How long is it? 1 season (12 episodes)

Initially resistant, he eventually becomes part of the fight, embarking on a journey that culminates in him becoming one of the Rebel Alliance’s most distinguished heroes.
What makes it appealing: Andor feels like the Star Wars series that undergoes a revolution: it offers mature storytelling, realistic filmmaking, and an emotionally stirring narrative that builds upon what we’ve seen before. Instead of focusing solely on Easter Eggs and content (story elements), it dares to aim for something greater: being genuinely good.

39. Haunting of Hill House
- Release date: October 12, 2018
- Genre: Horror
- Cast: Michael Huisman, Carla Gugino, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Katie Siegel
- How long is it?1 Season (10 episodes)
The Storyline: The narrative unfolds across two distinct periods: in 1992, the Crain family settles into Hill House, a location that harbors eerie supernatural events. Flash forward 26 years, and the Crains are back together, grappling with their haunting past as they try to understand its chilling implications.
The reason for our fondness: Mike Flanagan has become associated with high-quality horror, thanks to films like Ouija and Gerald’s Game, as well as Netflix productions, including this adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s chilling novel adapted into a series. This horror television show offers a rich blend of psychological horror, supernatural elements, and genuinely terrifying jump-scares that are earned. The acting cast, which Flanagan has utilized frequently, delivers consistently excellent performances. The mix of horror and tragedy in the story of the Crain family leaves a lasting impact even after the series concludes.

38. I’m Alan Partridge
- Release date: November 3, 1997
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Steve Coogan, Felicity Montagu, Simon Greenall
- How long is it? 2 seasons (12 episodes)
From a devoted listener’s perspective: I’m hooked on this Norfolk-based radio host who stubbornly holds onto his fading career. He serves up some incredibly awkward moments and hilariously awkward comedy gems that leave me cringing, but can’t help but laugh!
What appeals to us: Goal! If you’re a ’90s kid from the UK, it’s likely that lines from Alan Partridge have found their way into your everyday conversations. Unfortunately for Coogan, he set an exceptionally high standard with these characters and has been striving to meet it ever since. However, the quality of the comedy show is such that he doesn’t need to; Coogan crafted one of television’s most brilliant characters – an awkward, self-important radio host who adores ABBA. Despite the passing years, his character remains just as painfully funny today.

37. Hannibal
- Release date: April 4, 2013
- Genre: Horror
- Cast: Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelson, Laurence Fishburne
- How long is it? 3 Seasons (39 episodes)
Main Topic: As FBI investigator Will Graham pursues serial killers, he enlists the aid of forensic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, unknowingly collaborating with a man who practices cannibalism.
We appreciate it because: The adaptations of Thomas Harris’s Lecter novels have varied, with some being excellent and others not so much. However, Bryan Fuller’s TV portrayal stands out as one of the finest. This interpretation added a new dimension to the tales, particularly in the sensual scenes between Will and Hannibal. Mads Mikkelsen took on a challenging role given the high standards set by Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins, but he managed to infuse the character with a captivating charm and refined elegance that felt unique. The series also left viewers craving more due to Mikkelsen’s culinary skills displayed throughout the three seasons. Overall, it was enticing television that made eating people seem cool.

The Story: A cluster of affluent travelers flock to an upscale resort, only for opulence, hidden truths, and internal discord to swiftly transform their promised paradise into a darkly humorous critique of society.
What makes it appealing: The White Lotus offers an abundance of luxury vacations, portrays wealthy individuals in a deeply thought-provoking manner, and features a catchy theme tune that lingers in your mind – making it TV worth its weight in gold. Mike White’s satire masterfully critiques privilege with pinpoint accuracy while delivering surprising plot twists, award-winning acting, and an unforgettable Jennifer Coolidge performance. Additionally, few other shows on television could realistically depict a resort manager defecating into a suitcase in such graphic detail without causing controversy.

35. Killing Eve
- Release date: April 8, 2018
- Genre: Spy/Thriller
- Cast: Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia
- How long is it? 4 seasons (32 episodes)
Main Theme: A captivating cat-and-mouse chase ensues between the enigmatic MI5 agent Eve and the alluring yet lethal assassin Villanelle, propelling them both into unforeseen territories.
What we enjoy about it: Killing Eve initially presents as a clever cat-and-mouse chase, but soon transforms into an intriguing tale of love with a dark twist. It is both seductive and fashionable, offering an unexpectedly humorous element. Despite the debatable ending, its charm outweighs this minor flaw due to the captivating lead character, Villanelle, portrayed by Sandra Oh. If you didn’t instantly find yourself smitten with her mischievous act of spilling ice cream on a little girl, there might be something amiss with you.

34. ER (1994-2009)
- Release date: 1994-2009
- Genre: Drama
- Cast: George Clooney, Julianna Margulies, Laura Innes, Noah Wyle, Anthony Edwards
- How long is it? 15 seasons (331 episodes)
Main Theme: In the heart of Chicago, the typical American hospital series unfolds as medical professionals at County General Hospital navigate through the intricacies of their personal and work affairs.
Grey’s Anatomy or Holby City (for UK viewers) weren’t the first in medical dramas. That title goes to ER, which catapulted George Clooney to international fame and kept our mothers hooked. Before medical dramas started feeling like pantomime, they were serious, intense, and fulfilling. The episodes from the 90s are generally considered the best among fans.

33. Derry Girls

- Genre: Comedy

This narrative unfolds around a coming-of-age tale, taking place in Ireland, where a band of adolescent girls (including an unwilling housemate, a lad from England) navigate their identities and steer clear of complications as they move through the tumultuous period known as The Troubles.
What makes it special: This list features many funny shows, but Derry Girls stands out as a hidden gem that many people haven’t seen yet. Its small-town humor and charming characters make each episode capable of making you laugh out loud, without ever losing touch with the genuine emotional journey of growing up. It’s adorable, lighthearted, and filled with lines that will stick in your mind.

32. Happy Valley
- Release date: 2014-2023
- Genre: Crime/drama
- Cast: Sarah Lancashire, James Norton, Siobhan Finneran,
- How long is it? 3 seasons (18 episodes)
Title Synopsis: Grandmother Catherine Cawood takes care of her grandson while coping with her addict sister. A local girl’s kidnapping stirs up Catherine’s troubled past.
What makes it appealing: I strongly believe that showrunner Sally Wainwright is an exceptional TV writer, and actress Sarah Lancashire is equally deserving of recognition at the level of Meryl Streep. When you combine their talents, you get a crime drama that ranks among the best on television in the past 25 years. The raw Northern atmosphere, tension, and emotional depth will likely leave you feeling emotionally whipped (but it’s definitely worth it).

31. The Thick of It
- Release date: 2004-2012
- Genre: Political drama
- Cast: Peter Capaldi, Rebecca Front, Chris Addison, Joanna Scanlan, Roger Allam
- How long is it? 4 seasons (23 episodes)
Topic: A satirical examination of the intricate mechanisms within the British administration. Malcolm Tucker, a formidable political advisor, often unleashes his fiery temper on various individuals.
What we love about it: I could practically recite every episode’s script, and a 10-minute YouTube clip of insults is constantly playing in my mind. Unlike any other comedy before or since, its witty dialogue was ahead of its time (similar to Veep, if HBO didn’t care about anyone’s opinion). It was the ultimate binge-watch until reality started mirroring the show too closely. Tucker stands out as the most ingenious swearer around – watching him is nothing short of being in awe of his genius.

30. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

- How long is it? 16 seasons (170 episodes)
Main Topic: A band of unscrupulous companions run an unsavory tavern in Philadelphia, frequently hatching plans that lead to conflicts with the authorities, amongst themselves, and virtually everyone else they interact with.
What makes it appealing: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia seems almost timeless, as if it has been around forever. Remarkably, the show continues to thrive without any signs of decline, despite its characters being exceptionally unpleasant. They are crass, rude, and unmanageable, making each episode a test of how much discomfort you can endure. Nevertheless, you find yourself unable to look away, eager to see what outrageous antics the gang at Paddy’s Pub will concoct next.

- Genre: Action-adventure

- How long is it? 291 Episodes
As a dedicated fan, let me share my thoughts on this iconic series:
Title Summary: Dragon Ball Z – A journey of strength and protection for Earth’s heroes
The Allure: Dragon Ball Z has left an indelible mark on the world of pop culture. It revolutionized the Shonen genre, sparked a Western anime craze, and its impact on television and film is immeasurable. But beyond its cultural significance, it’s simply a fantastic show. While it may seem exaggerated or dramatic at times, reminiscent of an overly enthusiastic theater kid on talent show day, the animation is top-notch, the action sequences are thrilling, and the characters are endearing – causing even the most casual viewer to cheer with excitement as our heroes triumph against yet another threat to Earth.

28. Barry

- Genre: Comedy-drama

Main Theme: Once a Marine and now an assassin, our protagonist is disillusioned with his life. In the bustling city of Los Angeles, he discovers an unlikely interest – acting. Amidst Chechen gangsters, audition rooms, and contract killings, he’s a hitman on a quest for purpose.
Why we can’t get enough: Over four seasons, Hader takes us on a journey into his unique blend of humor and surreal darkness. Starting as an unusual concept that catches your attention, it rapidly develops into something more profound – yet unsettlingly hard to forget. Despite its bleakness, there’s a keen insightfulness to Barry that feels authentic, even when it becomes intense. This show is indeed a hidden treasure not to be missed.

26. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Watching the series felt like being a part of an exclusive high school gang, while Angel was every teenage girl’s dream boyfriend. Despite airing for seven seasons, “Buffy” maintained its appeal throughout its run.

25. Doctor Who

- Genre: Science-fiction
- Cast: Ncuti Gatwa (right now), Millie Gibson
- How long is it? 26 seasons (884 episodes)
A Quirky Extraterrestrial’s Journey Across Time and Space
Reason for Appreciation: British television staple “Doctor Who” is a captivating series that embodies virtues such as decency, tolerance, and compassion. It might seem conventional, but what makes it exceptional is its blend of excitement, fear, and pure enjoyment. This combination is so seamless that you only realize its wholesomeness once the closing credits have rolled, much like a dog consuming pills hidden within peanut butter.

24. Batman: The Animated Series
- Release date: September 5, 1992
- Genre: Superhero
- Cast: Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Efrem Zimbalist Jr, Loren Lester
- How long is it? 2 Seasons (83 episodes)
The Life Dedication of Bruce Wayne: Vigilante of Gotham City
Reasons for liking it: My esteemed colleague, Cameron Frew, recently declared Invincible as the best superhero show ever, but that’s understandable considering his youth. For those of us from the 90s, the true champion is Batman: The Animated Series. This series, with its brooding atmosphere, demonstrated that cartoons could engage adults without resorting to simplistic narratives. The key factor behind its popularity was its nuanced portrayal of Batman’s rogues gallery, contrasting them as intricate and often melancholic figures driven by desperation rather than madness, even though the Joker still retained his maniacal humor to some extent.

23. Fleabag
- Release date: September 16, 2016
- Genre: Comedy/Drama
- Cast: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sian Clifford, Andrew Scott
- How long is it? 2 seasons (12 episodes)
In a nutshell, I’m all about: Unraveling the tangled web of love, loss, and self-reproach in a brutally honest, witty, yet emotionally tumultuous journey, speaking directly to you from beyond the screen.
What makes them appealing: Killing Eve and Fleabag? They stand as compelling proof that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is incredibly talented. These shows are a mix of heart-wrenching and side-splittingly funny, making viewers laugh and cry within the same session (and I often rewatch them for this reason). With its sharp dialogue, clever breaks of the fourth wall, and an undeniably attractive priest character, Fleabag is a remarkable achievement in contemporary television.

- How long is it? 11 seasons (218 episodes)
Topic Overview: FBI duo Fox Mulder and Dana Scully delve into mysteries yet to be solved. Mulder leans towards the supernatural as explanation, whereas Scully remains skeptical.
We found The X-Files fascinating because it was unique and unpredictable. Some episodes hit the mark perfectly while others fell short, but each episode had a certain charm that kept us hooked for decades. The chemistry between Mulder and Scully was compelling, making us invest emotionally in their journey. It’s no secret that Gillian Anderson excels at whatever she takes on, making her performances truly captivating.

21. Peaky Blinders
- Release date: September 12, 2013
- Genre: Gangster
- Cast: Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson
- How long is it? 6 Seasons (36 episodes)
In essence: Following World War I, the story unfolds in Birmingham, with its focus on a merciless criminal organization headed by the highly dangerous and emotionally scarred Tommy Shelby.
What makes it appealing: Peaky Blinders, created by Steven Knight, offers a captivating blend of intense violence, political intrigue, catchy music, and stylish attire. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby allowed him to showcase his full acting potential, transforming the character into both a relatable monster and an inspiration for many young men to adopt that distinctive hairstyle. However, the immersive recreation of 1920s Birmingham might be the most striking feature of the series, as it brings the era to life in a vivid and compelling manner.

- Release date: September 9, 2001
- Genre: War
- Cast: Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, Scott Grimes, David Schwimmer, Neal McDonough
- How long is it?: 1 season (10 episodes)
In my perspective: I followed along as “Easy” Company, a U.S. paratrooper unit, endured intense training in Georgia and then soared over Normandy, bravely facing the trials and tribulations they experienced during their deployment in the European theatre of World War II. Band of Brothers offers an unforgettable account of their heroic struggle.
We appreciate it because it’s a groundbreaking achievement in modern television, offering an extensive, engaging experience meticulously crafted on an unprecedented scale. Its emotional depth demonstrated the potential of the medium beyond what was previously thought possible. To this day, the unveiling of the show’s ensemble cast still brings tears to my eyes.

19. Star Trek The Next Generation
- Release date: September 28, 1987
- Genre: Science-fiction
- Cast: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner as Data, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Denise Crosby
- How long is it?: 7 Seasons (178 episodes)
Topic Overview: The Next Generation, set post-Kirk’s initial five-year mission, delves into the adventures of a new Enterprise crew as they carry on Starfleet’s mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gone before.
Why it Stands Out: The Next Generation, despite not being the most action-packed series, offers a unique perspective on the future that modern television rarely explores. It tackled thought-provoking ethical dilemmas such as the essence of consciousness, family dynamics, and the burden of legacy. It also featured poignant stories about extinct civilizations and sacrifices made for the greater good. Its ability to capture these themes is what propelled Star Trek into the realm of pop culture icons, with The Next Generation arguably eclipsing the original series in this regard.

18. Black Mirror
- Release date: December 4, 2011
- Genre: Sci-fi/Horror/Thriller/Comedy
- How long is it? 6 seasons (26 episodes and two specials)
Exploring the Sinister Side of Technology – An Anthology Series
Overview: This series delves into the darker aspects of technology, transforming contemporary fears into chilling, intellectually stimulating, and frequently unnerving cautionary tales about the shadowy side of the digital era.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at why we’re captivated by Black Mirror: Charlie Brooker masterfully magnifies our deepest techno-anxieties and transforms them into an engaging spectacle. It’s the 21st century version of The Twilight Zone, yet it manages to carve its unique niche in contemporary pop culture, leaving an indelible mark on viewers worldwide. Have you ever found yourself referring to a shocking news story as “a Black Mirror episode”? Moreover, Brooker’s audacity is truly commendable – who else would dare launch their new series with the UK Prime Minister engaging in an explicit act on live TV?

16. Twin Peaks
- Release date: April 8, 1990
- Genre: Mystery
- Cast: Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle
- How long is it? 3 Seasons (48 episodes)
The main focus here is on FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, who’s been dispatched to the make-believe town of Twin Peaks. His task? To unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding the slaying of the beloved high school student, Laura Palmer, who was crowned Homecoming Queen.
What made it appealing: The enigma of “Who killed Laura Palmer?” was the core mystery that captivated audiences when Twin Peaks premiered in 1990. This TV show offered a unique blend of strange characters and David Lynch’s distinct brand of surrealism, which was unlike anything seen on television at the time. The murder investigation served as the driving force behind the series, but Twin Peaks also transformed the detective story into something reminiscent of a soap opera due to its focus on the town’s eccentric inhabitants. At its core, however, Twin Peaks delved into the evil that lurks beneath the surface in small-town America, a theme that Lynch had previously examined in his films and further explored in the prequel movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and the belated third season, Twin Peaks The Return.

A Hilarious Look into the Chaotic Lives of Roommates Mark and Jeremy
Reason for liking it: Jeremy, you’re outrageous! “Peep Show” is a 21st-century sitcom that stands out as one of the funniest and most relatable. It’s like mixing vinegar and rum – potent yet irresistible! The show has earned its place among the most beloved comedies in history, not only because it’s extremely quotable but also due to its spot-on portrayal of life’s awkward moments during early adulthood.

14. Better Call Saul
- Release date: February 8, 2015 – August 15, 2022
- Genre: Crime drama
- Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn, Giancarlo Esposito
- How long is it? 6 seasons (63 episodes)
Jimmy McGill’s story unfolds years prior to his transformation into Saul Goodman. Before his dealings with Albuquerque’s most infamous drug lord changed the course of his life, he struggled as a lesser-known lawyer, taking on various cases and striving for recognition – sometimes employing questionable or even illegal tactics, all while engaging in plenty of trickery.
We appreciate it because: Better Call Saul is not only as captivating as Breaking Bad, but sometimes even surpasses it, making it a television classic worth mentioning. Initially, I shared the doubts of many about revisiting such esteemed territory, but this prequel could be one of the best ever produced. It’s a unique blend of humor, shock, and profound sadness that delves into themes of temptation and fate – truly, a masterpiece in the kitchen.

13. The Office
- Release date: July 9, 2001
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman, Lucy Davis
- How long is it? 2 Seasons (14 episodes)
The Office is a comedy series that follows the everyday lives and antics of employees at a fictitious paper company called Wernham Hogg, located in Slough. It’s presented as if it were a real documentary.
What makes it appealing: Previously, fake documentaries were presented through movies like “This is Spinal Tap” and series such as “People Like Us”. However, “The Office” mastered the technique, revolutionizing television in the process. Countless imitators have emerged since then, but none have managed to replicate the unique blend of humor and emotion that “The Office” achieved so flawlessly.
Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant skillfully portrayed the monotony of office existence in a way that resonated with many viewers. In the character of David Brent, played by Gervais himself, they crafted an unforgettable boss figure, characterized by cringe-worthy humor, self-doubt, and overblown ambition. They produced only 12 episodes – along with a holiday special – which results in a lean, focused storyline without unnecessary jokes, characters, or scenes, creating a masterful piece of television.

12. Stranger Things
- Release date: July 15, 2016

- How long is it? 4 seasons (34 episodes)
Subject Matter: A young boy’s disappearance in Hawkins, Indiana leads a group of friends to encounter an enigmatic girl, a terrifying creature, and a long-standing mystery intertwined with Hawkins Lab.
Why it stands out: Despite facing justified critiques for its prolonged production (taking too much time to complete five seasons), Stranger Things remains one of the most innovative, captivating, and deservedly successful series that Netflix has ever produced. Its authentic ’80s nostalgia and intriguing overall mystery continue to leave us guessing about the Upside Down’s future developments. As Season 5 prepares to conclude on a high note, this is a show whose impact will likely linger for decades to come.

This innovative series stands out as one of the sharpest, most peculiar, and most disconcerting shows in recent memory. As we mentioned in our review for Season 2, it’s “on track to become a television classic for generations to come.

9. Game of Thrones
- Release date: April 17, 2011 – May 19, 2019
- Genre: Fantasy
- Cast: Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
- How long is it? 8 seasons (73 episodes)
The Main Theme: As various families vie for power over the Iron Throne and dominion of the Seven Kingdoms, a princess from the west, whose father was slain, sets out on a lengthy quest to reclaim her throne. Simultaneously, an ominous danger stirs in the far north that endangers every inhabitant of Westeros; no matter what actions they take, “winter is approaching.
The lesson we can learn from Game of Thrones: The success and downfall of Game of Thrones serves as an illustration of pop culture trends: it captivated audiences worldwide, boasted unmatched storytelling, grand spectacle, and popularized George R.R. Martin’s unique terminology, mythology, and names – but ultimately left fans disappointed with its final season.
Let’s not overlook the greatness of its origin: extraordinary high-fantasy television that remains unparalleled, even surpassed by none other than its (exceptional) sequel, House of the Dragon. “Always remember who you are.

Friends stands out among sitcoms because it focused on a group of friends living together in the city while job-hunting and seeking love, filling a niche previously occupied by family or coupled-based shows. The characters were well-crafted, each with unique and frequently humorous traits, and the actors brought them to life brilliantly, catapulting David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Matt Le Blanc, and Lisa Kudrow into household fame. 7. Mad Men
- Release date: July 19, 2007
- Genre: Drama
- Cast: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Christina Hendricks
- How long is it? 7 seasons (92 episodes)
In the ’60s and ’70s, I’ve been captivated by Mad Men – a series that delves into the bustling world of a top-tier advertising agency in New York City. The story primarily revolves around the life of the charismatic Don Draper, an advertising genius navigating the complexities of his professional and personal life during those dynamic times.
We appreciate Mad Men because from its opening scene to the very last, it’s one of the most stylish and enticing series you can find. The ’50s atmosphere and historical references are spot-on without being overly obvious or intrusive. The characters, particularly these high-flying ad executives, are almost addictive to watch, but what makes it truly captivating is the unpredictable and wild nature of the show. You’ll never know what challenges Don Draper will face next, and let’s not forget the moment when someone loses a limb in the office – that alone should convince you!

6. The West Wing
- Release date: September 22, 1999 – May 14, 2006
- Genre: Political drama
- Cast: Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, John Spencer, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney
- How long is it? 7 seasons (154 episodes)
In a Nutshell: Every day brings new challenges such as tax matters, assassination attempts, speeches, elections, and even bicycle accidents for President Bartlet and his team at the White House. They must swiftly navigate through each issue to ensure the country’s welfare.
What makes it special: In my view, The West Wing stands out as the best TV series ever produced. It’s bold yet hopeful, vast in narrative and detail, but incredibly engaging; challenging in its intelligence, yet always accessible (it leaves me feeling more knowledgeable than I truly am). At its finest, Sorkin’s fast-paced dialogues are more captivating than any grand spectacle you can think of – but beyond its countless memorable lines, it seems like a genuine agent for good; this is especially true in today’s world.
If you don’t agree, remain in your mistaken stance and become comfortable with being incorrect. Otherwise, you might provoke the anger of whatever residing above the tall structure.

5. Chernobyl
- Release date: May 6, 2019
- Genre: Historical/Drama
- Cast: Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, Paul Ritter
- How long is it? 1 season (5 episodes)
Main Theme: The miniseries “Chernobyl” offers a tense portrayal of the 1986 nuclear catastrophe, highlighting the ineptitude within the government and the selfless acts of individuals as they struggle to manage the disaster and its consequences.
What makes it appealing: The chilling authenticity of Chernobyl coupled with its masterful production makes for a captivating viewing experience. It transforms a disaster into a suspenseful thriller, demonstrating that the most terrifying elements aren’t supernatural entities but systemic failures. The performances, character choices, plot development, and execution are flawless (though it ranks as my favorite series ever, I understand that an editor might not consider a limited series based on a harrowing real-life event as top choice).

4. The Simpsons
- Release date: December 17, 1989
- Genre: Comedy
- Cast: Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer
- How long is it? 36 Seasons (781 episodes)
As a passionate gamer, let me share my thoughts on this engaging series:
What it’s all about: This sitcom takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the chaotic life of one of America’s most peculiar families – a hilarious portrayal of dysfunction at its finest.
Why I can’t get enough: The Simpsons not making it to the top 3? That’s preposterous! Though it may seem fashionable these days to criticize The Simpsons for losing its charm, I have a strong rebuttal. Silence. At its zenith, The Simpsons was the epitome of comedic brilliance (you can tell because every comedy since has borrowed from it). And that extraordinary achievement has earned it an incredible level of goodwill in my book.
In my opinion, the seasons 3 through 9 of television’s history are unparalleled in terms of quality and entertainment value. Every single episode is packed with laughter, memorable quotes, and some that can even tug at your heartstrings. Even though later seasons may not be perfect, episodes like “Halloween of Horror” and “Bart’s Birthday” show that The Simpsons remains exceptional… except for the Lady Gaga episode, which I still can’t find it in my heart to forgive.

3. The Sopranos
- Release date: January 10, 1999
- Genre: Gangster
- Cast: James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli
- How long is it? 6 Seasons (86 episodes)
The main theme revolves around Tony Soprano, an Italian-American gangster, who experiences issues with balancing his professional and personal life. After experiencing a string of panic attacks, he decides to consult a psychotherapist for assistance.
As a gamer, I can’t help but draw parallels between the captivating world of “The Sopranos” and my favorite immersive video games. The brilliance of David Chase lies in his ability to merge the thrilling life of a mobster with the everyday struggles of suburban family life in New Jersey. Just like in games, where we play both the hero and the anti-hero, audiences were initially stunned by Tony Soprano’s dual roles, yet found themselves empathizing with his marital troubles and squabbles with his kids. It’s a testament to James Gandolfini’s exceptional acting that he made Tony Soprano relatable despite his questionable actions.
Surrounding Tony is an ensemble of characters as dynamic as any video game NPC (Non-Player Character). One moment they’re making you laugh, the next they’re sending chills down your spine. This unpredictability kept us hooked throughout the show’s celebrated run, and even today, the divisive finale remains a hot topic of discussion, 20 years later. It seems that even in TV, as in gaming, Chase nailed it right.

2. Succession
- Release date: June 3, 2018
- Genre: Comedy/Drama
- Cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook
- How long is it? 4 seasons (39 episodes)
Main Topic: A wealthy media tycoon sets up a power struggle among his troubled offspring, aiming to decide who will take charge of his global media conglomerate.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to admit: nothing beats the thrill of watching the rich and powerful trip over their own arrogance. If you’re familiar with The Thick of It, you’d recognize Jesse Armstrong’s dialogue – it’s so chock-full of cutting remarks, it feels like a modern take on Shakespeare. And if Hamlet is his masterpiece, then Succession is certainly his dark comedy.
It’s a gripping tale of corporate and family betrayal that makes Wall Street look like amateurs. Once you start watching, you’ll find yourself hitting the replay button again and again. Logan Roy might despise you for it, but trust me, every second is worth it.

1. Breaking Bad
- Release date: January 20, 2008
- Genre: Drama
- Cast: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn
- How long is it? 5 seasons (62 episodes)
A timid chemistry teacher, upon learning about his cancer diagnosis, recruits one of his former pupils to assist him in manufacturing and peddling crystal meth, leading him on a path to become one of the most infamous drug kingpins in New Mexico.
What makes it appealing: In two simple words, exceptional series. Shows like Breaking Bad top many viewers’ lists for a reason, and that’s due to its unmatched perfection. The gritty, criminal aspect of the lives of Walter and Jesse provides the danger and turmoil one could desire, yet it remains one of the most amusing non-comedy series you could watch. Vince Gilligan demonstrates genius in making viewers sympathize with the villain, despise the hero, and often leaves us guessing who’s who. While there are numerous excellent shows available, let’s be honest: Breaking Bad stands alone in its brilliance.
