Subscriptions can hurt sales, but CD Projekt also sees some perks from being part of these offers.
Xbox Game Pass has become a standard part of the gaming world. But even though it’s been around for several years – Microsoft first launched it in the middle of 2017 – people are still debating whether it’s a profitable model and how it’s changing the gaming industry.
Okay, so as a Cyberpunk 2077 player, it’s cool to hear the game’s doing well! CD Projekt Red just shared their latest financial report, and it turns out when Cyberpunk 2077 hit PlayStation Plus, it really helped sales of the Phantom Liberty expansion. Basically, more people playing the base game meant more people buying the expansion. This led to a huge jump in their revenue – a 53% increase compared to last year! They made around 350 million PLN this quarter, up from about 227 million PLN last year. That’s awesome to see after the rocky launch, honestly.
According to TweakTown, players are happy to purchase expansions, even if the original game might eventually be removed from the PS Plus subscription service. This shows that long-term subscriptions are a viable model, and it also suggests that CD Projekt can expect increased sales of the core Cyberpunk 2077 game as players buy it to continue enjoying the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Subscription and sales
CD Projekt Group has acknowledged that offering a game through a subscription service typically leads to lower sales. During a recent investor conference, co-CEO Michal Nowakowski confirmed that they’ve consistently seen sales decrease when a game is added to a subscription platform.
Despite a slight dip in quarterly profits, adding Cyberpunk 2077 to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass has been worthwhile. Analyst Nowakowski noted increased sales of downloadable content and emphasized that this move will benefit the game both immediately and in the future, ultimately leading to higher overall sales than would have been possible otherwise.
Offering the base game through a subscription service usually causes a temporary dip in direct sales. We launched the core game on PlayStation Plus, but not the expansion pack. However, our goal was to still exceed our typical sales for this point in time, and we believe we achieved that with this release. This also created more chances to sell the Phantom Liberty expansion. Ultimately, this benefits our company’s profits and the long-term success of Cyberpunk 2077.
Despite being released nearly five years ago, Cyberpunk 2077 remains popular, thanks to ongoing efforts by CD Projekt Red. After addressing initial issues with the game, they’ve consistently released updates and found creative ways to keep players engaged, like the Cyberpunk Edgerunners series and the Guilty Gear: Strive DLC. Its recent availability on PS Plus is yet another way CD Projekt Red is keeping the game in the public eye.
It’s also crucial to remember that the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077 – particularly on consoles – is still fresh in many players’ minds, even after five years. This might make some gamers wary of buying the game now, even at a discounted price, and especially with the new expansion.
Things change when a game is included with a subscription service the player already has, like PlayStation Plus. This likely explains the big jump in sales for Phantom Liberty. Subscribers could try out Cyberpunk 2077 for free and then decide if they wanted to buy it before it was removed from the PlayStation Plus library.
These actions also greatly help the overall brand, which is especially important with more Cyberpunk content coming – including continued support for Cyberpunk 2077 and a second season of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners series. Even if sales were to dip a little – and they likely wouldn’t be significant after all this time and with current deals – it’s a worthwhile trade-off to expand the popularity of the Cyberpunk universe.
