As a huge movie fan, I’ve always thought that it has been one of the most exciting places for cinema, consistently delivering modern masterpieces like Sinners, Weapons, and The Black Phone. With Halloween approaching, there are tons of scary movies to choose from, but it really shines with its incredible selection. It’s owned by Warner Bros., and honestly, the company has some of the best horror films from the last few decades – a few of them are *truly* exceptional. What I love even more is that so many of these instant classics have spawned entire franchises, all available on the streaming service!
The horror genre truly shines when it expertly mixes tension, suspense, and genuine scares, creating a feeling of unease that ultimately leaves viewers terrified. Some films excel at startling audiences with quick jump scares, while others shock through the disturbing events that unfold for the characters. Covering everything from classic ghost stories and Lovecraft-inspired terror to tales of demonic possessions, these films make HBO Max the top destination for great horror movies this Halloween.
Insidious Is a Chilling Look at the Underworld
Insidious tells the story of Josh and Renai Lambert, who experience frightening events after moving into a new house. Their children are disturbed by unseen forces, and their son, Dalton, falls into a mysterious coma that doctors can’t diagnose. Feeling helpless, the couple seeks help from a psychic and a team of paranormal researchers to determine if something supernatural is happening. The truth they uncover is deeply unsettling, revealing that malevolent entities are trying to use their family as a gateway to our world.
With its clever use of jump scares and skillful building of tension, Insidious keeps viewers constantly on edge, anticipating the next frightening apparition. The film deliberately focuses on being both creepy and scary, culminating in a memorable ending that launched a successful franchise. Widely considered a groundbreaking horror film, it raised the standard for haunted house movies following Paranormal Activity, and the genre hasn’t been quite the same since. As of October 1st, you can stream the first three Insidious films on HBO Max.
The Conjuring Kicked Off a Franchise
The story begins when the Perron family relocates to an isolated farmhouse in the countryside of Rhode Island. Soon after moving in, they are terrorized by aggressive spirits that repeatedly attack them, leaving the mother with unexplained bruises. Feeling hopeless, she seeks assistance from Ed and Lorraine Warren, a husband-and-wife team of demonologists famous for their investigation of the Annabelle case. Upon arriving at the farmhouse, Lorraine senses a history of sorrow and works quickly to protect the family before the haunting escalates.
The Conjuring launched a successful horror series based on the real-life investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren, weaving famous haunted locations into a scary and ongoing story. Luckily for horror fans, you can stream the whole franchise on HBO Max, making it a great goal to watch them all before Halloween. These films are consistently engaging and have been popular with audiences since 2013, and for good reason. Whether it’s the depiction of the Enfield Poltergeist or Lorraine’s struggles against the demonic nun, every movie in the series has been well-received. Now that the third film is out, fans can aim to finish the entire saga by October 31st.
Stephen King’s It Is the Stuff of Nightmares
Since his first published books, Stephen King has become a leading horror writer, and Carrie really launched his career. Many consider It to be his best horror novel yet. It tells the story of a group of kids in the Maine town of Derry, where children are disappearing. Their investigation brings them face-to-face with a creature that preys on children. This killer can change into whatever terrifies its victims, and it haunts the children. Years later, they return as adults determined to finally save their hometown.
Imagine The Goonies reimagined with a dark, Lovecraftian twist – that’s It. It features Pennywise, widely considered one of the most terrifying villains in horror history. If you’re afraid of clowns, this movie will be twice as frightening! Watching the monster hunt its victims delivers some of the most gripping and intense scenes in recent horror films. Now that both parts of the movie are available on HBO Max, it’s the perfect choice for a truly scary Halloween night marathon.
Evil Dead Rise Is an Unrestrained Bloodbath
The story began in 1981, following Ash Williams and his friends as they unintentionally released evil spirits by reading from the Necronomicon. After a 2013 attempt to restart the series didn’t succeed and Ash vs Evil Dead concluded, Lee Cronin delivered what many consider the strongest film in the franchise since the 1980s, filled with intense gore, sudden scares, and numerous frightening moments. The new film focuses on a family who, inside their apartment, make the same error as Ash, allowing the Deadites to return and take over their neighbors.
I have to say, Evil Dead Rise is one of the most intensely gory films I’ve seen in a long time! It really pushes you to see just how much horror you can handle before looking away. The Deadites have *always* been iconic monsters in the horror genre, and I think Alyssa Cronin absolutely nailed portraying them. If you’re looking for a truly frightening movie for Halloween, few can compare to this 2023 film – the twists are shocking, and it’s just soaked in blood! And if you enjoy it, you can also find the sequel/remake, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, available to stream on HBO Max right alongside it.
The Exorcist Raised the Bar for Horror
The Exorcist starts with the troubling possession of twelve-year-old Regan MacNeil by an evil force, deeply frightening her mother. When traditional solutions fail, she seeks help from Father Karras, a priest grappling with his own beliefs following the loss of his mother. He teams up with the experienced Father Merrin, and together they determine Regan is controlled by the wicked demon Pazuzu. As the girl’s life and spirit are at risk, the two priests do everything they can to drive the demonic presence from her home.
The Exorcist was a key film in starting a new wave of popular horror movies in the 1970s, making it easier for hits like Halloween and The Omen to succeed. Thanks to its innovative special effects – and a truly terrifying depiction of demonic possession – it became one of the most shocking films ever made, leading to censorship attempts, people leaving the theater, and widespread public upset. Even after five decades, The Exorcist is still considered director William Friedkin’s most important work, and continues to be a beloved classic for many critics, fans, and filmmakers.
