Some classic films become deeply ingrained in our culture and are constantly referenced even today. Nosferatu and The Phantom of the Opera are over 100 years old, and we still see their impact. But many other excellent older horror movies have been forgotten over time, despite being just as deserving of recognition.
Lots of fantastic movies never become well-known, and that’s true for horror too. Classic horror actors like Lon Chaney, Vincent Price, and Peter Cushing all starred in excellent films that didn’t get the recognition they deserved. Here are some of the best older horror movies that are still genuinely scary today.
The Unknown Is a Really Early Example of Body Horror That’s Still Hard to Watch
Lon Chaney is most famous for his role in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and for being the father of Lon Chaney Jr. However, he also starred in many other noteworthy films, including a particularly excellent one called The Unknown.
Chaney portrays Alonzo, a criminal in disguise who works at a sideshow to conceal who he really is. He pretends to be missing both arms, but cleverly hides them within his costume. He develops feelings for Nanon, who is initially captivated by his apparent disability. Alonzo starts to consider actually harming himself to maintain the illusion and meet her expectations.
What makes The Unknown so good is the skill of the filmmakers and actors before they became famous. A prime example is director Tod Browning, who later made the controversial but compelling Freaks in 1932. While silent movies aren’t as popular today, The Unknown remains a powerful and engaging film.
The Raven Is an Edgar Allan Poe Homage Worthy of His Twisted Mind
Despite sharing a title with Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem, this film isn’t actually based on it. It’s more of a tribute to Poe’s brilliance. The movie stars Bela Lugosi as Dr. Richard Vollin, a neurosurgeon completely fascinated with Poe’s work, to the point where he’s built a torture chamber inspired by the stories. You could say Vollin is the ultimate Poe devotee.
In a disturbing scene, a surgeon intentionally disfigures a criminal, Edmond Bateman. He then tells Bateman he’ll fix the damage only if Bateman assists with his wicked plans. The movie continues to become increasingly disturbing after this point.
While some older movies starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff don’t seem very frightening now, The Raven still holds up. Its disturbing theme of torture is what makes it scary even today. You’d expect a film with Poe, Lugosi, and Karloff to be a hit with horror fans, but unfortunately, it’s been largely forgotten over time.
The Mad Magician Goes Way Farther Than Most 1950s Movies
When talking about classic horror films from Hollywood’s golden age, one actor stands out. With his unique voice, comedic timing, and total dedication to his characters, he’s arguably the greatest horror star America has ever produced. Though The Mad Magician isn’t his most famous film, it’s definitely among his most disturbing.
In this story, Price stars as Gallico the Great, a magician who kills his employer after a disagreement about money. To cover up this crime and protect his secret, Gallico is forced to continue killing. He conveniently has a large buzz saw at home which becomes a crucial tool in his sinister deeds.
If you believe the slasher genre started with the films most people think of, you need to see The Mad Magician. It actually has all the elements of a slasher movie, and its violence is surprisingly strong, even compared to some later films in the genre. The Mad Magician is a well-made film that deserves to be acknowledged as an early influence.
The Curse of Frankenstein Is Still One of the Best Frankenstein Movies
For years, The Curse of Frankenstein wasn’t as well-known as other versions of the story. Now, it’s likely to be eclipsed by Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein film. However, it remains a compelling adaptation, offering a unique take by focusing on Victor Frankenstein’s descent into madness and portraying the monster as a less central figure.
Using this approach could have made the story boring, but Peter Cushing delivers a fantastic performance as the iconic mad scientist. While Mary Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein was mostly careless, Cushing portrays him as cold and relentlessly ambitious.
While Curse doesn’t pack the same emotional punch as either Universal’s or Netflix’s Frankenstein adaptations, it shifts the story from a tragedy to a straight-up horror film. It might not be overly graphic by today’s standards, but Peter Cushing’s performance creates a deeply unsettling and psychologically frightening experience.
The Masque of the Red Death Builds on an Edgar Allan Poe Story in Surprising Ways
Most of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories are too short to fill a full-length movie, so some adaptations create new plots and simply use a Poe title. A good example is The Masque of the Red Death, which skillfully combines two of Poe’s stories – “The Masque of the Red Death” and “Hop-Frog” – and adds some well-thought-out original material.
The story features Prince Prospero, who isn’t simply wealthy and unpleasant in this version. Here, his harshness stems from his devotion to dark practices. While a deadly plague sweeps the land, Prospero and his guests hide within his castle, indulging in a wild and disturbing celebration. As the party continues, a sinister otherworldly presence closes in on Prospero, culminating in a shocking ending.
The Masque of the Red Death is a truly remarkable film. It blends gothic horror with deep philosophical themes, reminiscent of the work of Ingmar Bergman. In fact, you can see echoes of Bergman’s classic film, The Seventh Seal, which is high praise. Add to that a particularly chilling performance by Vincent Price, and you have a film that absolutely deserves to be considered a classic.
