As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m sad to share that my favorites – Dune: Part Two, Woman of the Hour, and Better Man – have found themselves in trouble with the Academy due to rule violations. This unfortunate turn of events means they won’t be eligible for certain award categories at the Oscars.
2024’s Golden Globe awards are history, BAFTAs are on the horizon, and TopMob’s picks for the best movies of 2024 have been announced. The competition for next year’s Oscars is starting to heat up.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement as we approach Friday, January 17! That’s when the Academy will reveal its nominees for this year’s Oscars. Names like Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Substance, and The Brutalist are all rumored to make a strong showing across various categories. I can hardly wait to see who will be recognized!
However, certain Oscar categories have already disqualified specific films, leaving these five as the main contenders for now.
Woman of the Hour
Excluded From: Best Picture
Anna Kendrick’s first directorial effort, “Woman of the Hour,” is a nerve-wracking thriller centered around the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who made an appearance on the popular dating show “The Dating Game” back in 1978.
In numerous reviews, the movie was highly praised, earning the title “Best True Crime Movie of the Year” in our Woman of the Hour critique.
To be considered, Academy guidelines require that feature films should initially be screened in at least one of six major American cities’ commercial movie theaters and continue a qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same theater.
woman named “Woman of the Hour” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival initially, but later became available on Netflix. This might indicate that it didn’t meet the requirements for a traditional theatrical release.
Dune: Part Two
Excluded From: Best Score
In the upcoming Dune 2 film, Hans Zimmer’s score is highly anticipated to win the Best Score Academy Award, as it follows the success of the original Dune movie’s soundtrack.
Nevertheless, the score was deemed ineligible due to excessive use of music from the initial film, a decision that has sparked outrage in Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune.
At a recent Director’s Guild screening, as reported by SlashFilm, I expressed my strong disagreement with the Academy’s choice to omit Hans from their ranks. Frankly, his score stands out among the best of this year for me. In fact, I rarely use the term ‘genius,’ but when it comes to Hans, it’s hard not to apply it.
Bird
Excluded From: Best Picture
Andrea Arnold, known for her innovative and critically-adored directing style, has garnered much praise for her poignant coming-of-age film, “Bird”. It was universally admired by many.
Additionally, it received seven nominations for the British Independent Film Awards and was recognized as one of the top 10 independent films by the National Board of Review.
The movie “Bird” was screened theatrically in the U.S. by Mubi, but that’s not what’s causing the problem. Instead, it seems that the Academy has implemented stricter criteria for diversity and representation, which could potentially affect “Bird’s” chances of being nominated for Best Picture.
Better Man
Excluded From: Best Song
Discussing Robbie Williams’ reactions as a Golden Globe nominee for ‘Better Man,’ along with his perspectives regarding the disqualification of his song “Forbidden Road” at the Oscars.
— Deadline (@DEADLINE) January 6, 2025
In simpler terms, the film titled “Better Man” is a biographical drama about Robbie Williams, famously portrayed by an extraordinary actor – a monkey. We found this unique and engaging production to be exceptional, rating it 4-stars in our review. In our “Better Man” review, we expressed that even if one isn’t a fan of the man or his music, the captivating performance of the leading monkey actor makes it impossible to look away from this film.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about the movie, which is brimming with songs from Robbie’s past, including the captivating new number, “Forbidden Road.” However, it seems that this song has sparked some controversy. According to Rolling Stone, it was disqualified due to its striking resemblance to a 1973 hit by Jim Croce titled, “I Got a Name.
Regarding the decision at the Golden Globes, Williams explained to Deadline (in the video): “The rules are the rules, and we must abide by them. It would’ve been pleasant – but also, as an introvert, it means one less social gathering I don’t have to attend.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Excluded From: Best Picture
We really enjoyed the new Sonic movie; in our Sonic the Hedgehog 3 review, we referred to it as ‘a joyful, wide-smiling extravaganza that faithfully celebrates the imagery of a gaming legend.'” This maintains the original meaning while being more natural and easy to read.
However, due to the criteria set by those previously mentioned diversity and inclusion standards, characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and their crew might not qualify for the main Oscar award. Consequently, there could be a noticeable void in the form of a hedgehog at this year’s event.
Emilia Pérez is poised for potential Oscar recognition, however, her chances might be bolstered by circumstances that could be deemed unfavorable.
