Okay, so I’ve gotten a peek at what Sony’s cooking with their live-action Spider-Noir series, and honestly, it might be the most exciting thing Marvel’s put out in a long time. We’re talking a 1930s New York setting, all shadows and fedoras, and from what I’ve seen, Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir is going to have plenty of bad guys to throw down with. It’s shaping up to be a really cool, gritty take on the character.
The first trailer for Spider-Noir suggests a variety of villains will appear, ranging from powerful crime lords to updated versions of familiar supervillains. Aside from characters who haven’t been officially confirmed yet, like Mister Negative and Man-Spider, here’s a ranking of 5 villains we know will be in the series, ordered from least to most dangerous.
5. Cat Hardy
Felicia Hardy, known as “Cat” (played by Li Jun Li), is a nightclub singer connected to a criminal underworld – this show’s version of the Black Cat character. In Marvel comics, Black Cat is famous for being a thief, a romantic interest, and sometimes an enemy of Spider-Man.
The latest trailer suggests Spider-Man Noir and Cat Hardy will have a complex relationship. Cat Hardy isn’t simply a villain; she seems like a mysterious and morally ambiguous character. She might be helping Ben Reilly with his investigation, but it’s also possible she’s manipulating everyone to get what she wants.
4. Sandman
Jack Huston will play Spider-Noir, introducing a fresh take on Flint Marko, also known as The Sandman. He’s expected to appear as a bodyguard, possibly working for Silvermane, and this version of the character won’t be entirely composed of sand, differing from the traditional Marvel depiction.
This new version of the character will have incredibly durable skin, described as feeling like stone, just like the Sandman Noir from the comics. He’s a ruthless mob enforcer who got his nickname because he kills people with his bare hands. This change makes him feel more realistic and violent, which suits the dark and gritty style of Spider-Noir.
3. Molten Man
Molten Man is a significantly dangerous villain. In Marvel comics, Mark Raxton’s body is made of incredibly hot metal and is almost indestructible, allowing him to create intense heat and radiation. However, the brief glimpse of Molten Man in the Spider-Noir trailer suggests this version, set in the 1930s, might not be as powerful as his comic book counterpart.
Despite this, the enemy appears to have powerful fire-based attacks. Hints in the trailer suggest he may have been specifically hired to target Silvermane. This strengthens the possibility that Spider-Man Noir will become entangled in a complex conspiracy, potentially even a full-blown gang war in New York City.
2. Electro
In the Spider-Man Noir comics, Max Dillon, who became the villain Electro, used to be a photographer. He later built a device with a generator that allowed him to shock people with electricity.
The Spider-Noir trailer briefly showed Electro, hinting at a version of the character who can create and control electricity directly from his body. Given the huge growth in electrical systems during the 1930s, a live-action Electro in this setting could be a truly powerful and dangerous villain.
1. Silvermane
Silvermane, played by Brendan Gleeson, is the main villain in the upcoming Spider-Noir series. Originally named Silvio Manfredi in the comics, he’s a powerful and paranoid crime boss with extensive connections to Ben Reilly’s history as Spider-Man.
In the standard Marvel Universe, Silvermane is a notorious crime leader connected to The Maggia, who later became a powerful cyborg hoping to live longer. Although we likely won’t see his transformation into a cyborg in Spider-Noir, it’s highly probable that Silvermane will be a key figure in Reilly’s case and the biggest danger he faces.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Spider-Noir in action! It sounds like he’ll have everything he needs to take on this villain – a familiar face from the movies, no less. It’s going to be a great fight!
In Spider-Noir’s gritty, old-fashioned world, widespread corruption throughout the city is potentially a bigger threat than any individual supervillain. This is a preliminary list of villains we’ve seen so far, and it will be interesting to see if this ranking remains accurate once the series begins streaming later this year.
Spider-Noir begins streaming on May 27th on Prime Video and MGM+.
