While known for many things, Dragon Ball truly became a classic thanks to its incredible action scenes. The series, created by Akira Toriyama, is famous for intense battles with world-ending power, but it also manages to weave in character development and growth even during those fights.
Long battles are common in Dragon Ball, often lasting many episodes, particularly when the villains are powerful. However, just because a fight is long doesn’t mean it’s always exciting. The most memorable Dragon Ball battles are truly captivating, filled with intense action and satisfying emotional moments from beginning to end.
Goku & Vegeta’s First DBZ Battle Is a Perfectly-Plotted Masterpiece
Watching the Saiyan Saga in Dragon Ball Z always struck me as a fascinating shift. It still felt connected to the lighter, more adventurous spirit of the original Dragon Ball, but with a bigger, more dramatic scope. The rivalry between Goku and Vegeta really became a classic story of ‘nature versus nurture’. Both were Saiyans with incredible power, but they’d grown up in totally different ways. Vegeta couldn’t stand the thought of being equal to Goku, and he was dangerously willing to destroy the entire planet just to win.
Goku and Vegeta’s first battle is fast-moving and focuses on strategy, rather than just a long series of attacks. Goku pushes the Kaio-Ken to its limits, leading to a memorable clash with Vegeta’s Galick Gun. He then tries the Spirit Bomb, but even with help, it isn’t enough to defeat Vegeta.
This famous fight from Dragon Ball reaches its climax when Vegeta transforms into a Great Ape, overwhelming Goku and forcing him to rely on his friends for help. Dragon Ball Z then showcases an unusual alliance of fighters working together to defeat Vegeta, prompting both the audience and Vegeta himself to consider the strength of teamwork and the possibility of redemption over revenge.
Taking Down The Ginyu Force Is Still a Highlight for the Z Fighters
As a huge DBZ fan, I always get excited when the Ginyu Force shows up! They’re just so over-the-top and their powers are unforgettable, making those fights really stick with you. Take Guldo, for example – the ability to stop time by holding his breath? Amazing! Watching Gohan and Krillin struggle against him is seriously tense. But that fight is also where things get really interesting because it’s the beginning of a totally unexpected team-up with Vegeta! He actually saves Gohan and Krillin from Guldo, and even though the three of them try, they can’t quite overcome the sheer power of Recoome. It’s a classic moment!
The battle with the Ginyu Force is filled with intense and sometimes difficult-to-watch moments, particularly their harsh treatment of young Gohan. Seeing Goku easily defeat Recoome is a hugely satisfying payoff. However, the fight reaches an even higher level of drama when Captain Ginyu steals Goku’s body, forcing Goku’s loved ones to battle against their friend in a possessed form.
The body swap between Ginyu and Goku was a surprising twist that forced everyone to think in new ways about how to fix the situation. Goku’s fast reaction – throwing a frog in front of Ginyu’s attack – was incredibly clever, but it led to a consequence that some might consider worse than dying.
Goku Hits a New Peak in His First Battle Against a God of Destruction
Dragon Ball Super starts by introducing powerful new characters like Gods of Destruction and Angels, along with the Super Saiyan God transformation. The God of Destruction for Universe 7, Beerus, comes to Earth specifically to find someone strong enough to challenge him as a Super Saiyan God. The first five episodes feature some of the best action sequences in the entire Dragon Ball series and are a great way to begin this exciting new era of the franchise.
The battle between Super Saiyan God and Beerus is really enjoyable, and it’s a great way to showcase what Super Saiyan God can do. Even though Beerus barely uses any of his full strength, the fight still feels intense and exciting. Plus, it only lasts five episodes, so it doesn’t drag on, and Dragon Ball Super keeps introducing new elements in each part.
The battle reaches an incredible peak high above Earth, even for a series as over-the-top as Dragon Ball. It sets a new, higher level of power that becomes the standard for Dragon Ball Super, and the fight itself is visually stunning. The fiery aura of Super Saiyan God Goku is a particularly brilliant design that Dragon Ball fans will remember for a long time.
Cell Puts The Z-Fighters to the Ultimate Test
Cell is a compelling villain in Dragon Ball Z who, like many before him, gets stronger by transforming through several stages. He’s already a problem in his first form, but when he absorbs Android 17 and becomes Semi-Perfect Cell, he becomes a much more dangerous enemy.
When Semi-Perfect Cell transformed, Android 16 fought back fiercely. Then, Tien unexpectedly appeared and relentlessly attacked Cell with his Neo Tri-Beam, eventually overwhelming him and stopping his attacks. This ambush on Cell is remembered as one of Tien’s final significant contributions to the story, as he appears less frequently in later parts of Dragon Ball Z.
Vegeta quickly gains the upper hand against Cell when he joins the battle, and he nearly defeats him immediately. However, Cell cleverly uses Vegeta’s pride against him, preventing a quick finish. This leads to a compelling conflict between Vegeta and Future Trunks as they argue over what to do with Cell. The action is non-stop and incredibly intense, especially when Cell absorbs Android 18, becoming much more powerful and easily surpassing Vegeta’s best attacks. It’s a truly devastating moment.
Goku’s Cell Games Clash With Perfect Cell Produces Fierce & Fatal Consequences
Cell’s earlier battle with Goku was more impactful than his fight with Gohan. The fight with Goku really showcased everything Cell had been building towards as a villain. Over four exciting episodes, Cell used the powers he’d absorbed from the Z-Fighters against Goku, who cleverly fought to stay alive and ultimately defeat his opponent.
Goku in his Super Saiyan form and Perfect Cell seem to be equally matched, making their fight incredibly tense and unpredictable. What’s really great about it is that the battle doesn’t follow the usual patterns – it genuinely surprises viewers.
The fight reaches a predictable climax when Goku uses his Instant Kamehameha, catching Cell by surprise and destroying much of his body. Although Cell recovers, Goku surprisingly gives up and leaves the battle. This is a shocking turn of events, but Goku firmly believes Gohan is the one who will ultimately defeat Cell.
