Better Off Ted (2009-2010)
The title, Better Off Ted, is a silly play on words, and it’s also misleading about what the show is actually about. You might expect a show with that name to be similar to series like Six Feet Under or Pushing Daisies, focusing on themes of death because of the rhyme. However, Better Off Ted has absolutely nothing to do with death, graveyards, or anything related to mortuaries.
Better Off Ted is a funny show that makes fun of corporate life. It’s about a company that creates ridiculous and dangerous inventions, like killer pandas and weaponized pumpkins. The main character, Ted Crisp (played by Jay Harrington), is the head of research and development who cleverly uses company rules and procedures to stop his employer’s evil plans.
Mr. Robot (2015-2019)
The name Mr. Robot sounds like it could belong to a kids’ cartoon, an old-fashioned educational program, or a science fiction story about a robot. You might even imagine him getting a job and earning that title. But actually, Mr. Robot is a suspenseful and mind-bending thriller focusing on a cybersecurity expert and hacker who struggles with severe social anxiety.
Rami Malek plays Elliot Alderson, a hacker who is brought in to help a revolutionary anarchist known as “Mr. Robot” with various jobs. The show is a thought-provoking exploration of themes like capitalism and taking the law into your own hands. It took a while to build an audience, likely because the title didn’t immediately appeal to viewers.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia (2005-Present)
If you somehow hadn’t heard of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – which is hard to imagine these days – I’d challenge you to figure out what it’s about just from the title. You’d likely think it was a cheerful talk show, a family comedy, or maybe even a program about the weather.
It’s surprising, but this show is a really funny comedy, even though it features a group of incredibly unhappy people. The title becomes a bit ironic once you know what the show is about, but the fact that everyone usually calls it Always Sunny or IASIP isn’t exactly a good sign.
Fleabag (2016-2019)
Fleabag is a standout comedy series of recent years. It features fantastic performances and can be deeply moving, all while consistently delivering humor. The show is clever, relatable, and honest, with a sharp wit, and its title hints at the complex character at its center, played by creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
While the name ‘Fleabag’ has a personal connection to Phoebe Waller-Bridge – it was her childhood nickname and reflects the character’s chaotic nature – it isn’t a particularly captivating title for a TV series. The name doesn’t offer any clues about the show’s content and initially suggests something off-putting, which is ironic given how charming and engaging the show actually is.
Person Of Interest (2011-2016)
The title Person of Interest doesn’t really do the show justice. It makes it sound like a program about someone vaguely interesting, when it’s actually much more complex. While the show does involve crime and legal issues, it’s far more than just a typical crime drama.
I absolutely love Person of Interest! It’s a really amazing sci-fi show starring Michael Emerson as Harold Finch, a billionaire who creates this incredible AI. Basically, it can predict when someone’s going to commit a serious crime. But it’s not just a crime show – it really makes you think about whether we actually have free will, and it’s super thrilling while it does it.
