The popular shark thriller, 47 Meters Down, which started a series of movies, will be available to watch for free on Tubi starting November 3rd.
The 2017 film 47 Meters Down features Claire Holt and Mandy Moore (known from The Princess Diaries). The movie follows two sisters on vacation in Mexico who decide to go cage diving. Their adventure turns into a terrifying fight for survival when the cage breaks and sinks to the ocean floor, leaving them trapped underwater with dwindling oxygen and great white sharks circling nearby. They desperately search for a way to escape.
The movie had a promising start, with a suspenseful plot and scary sharks that reminded many of Jaws. However, it didn’t become the blockbuster it was expected to be. Reviews were mixed, and most viewers didn’t like it. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 53% rating based on over 150 reviews, while audiences only gave it a 35% positive rating from more than 10,000 votes.
Critics felt the movie didn’t fully explore its scary potential, although they praised the actors. While viewers on Rotten Tomatoes found the plot predictable and typical, many admitted it wasn’t terrible and appreciated the intense, enclosed feeling created by the underwater location.
Although critics and audiences weren’t huge fans, the movie 47 Meters Down was actually quite successful financially. It made $62 million around the world, despite only costing $5 million to make. This led to a sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which came out in 2019. The sequel followed a new group of characters – a group of teenage girls – as they explored a sunken Mayan city while scuba diving, only to become trapped by sharks.
Despite being a sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged was actually better received by audiences than the first film. It earned a 68% approval rating based on reviews from over 1,000 viewers on Rotten Tomatoes and proved to be profitable, earning $47 million at the box office on a $12 million budget.
47 Meters Down Franchise Plans Terrifying Third Installment
In 2024, a new installment was announced for the popular horror series. The story centers around a father trying to connect with his daughter during a scuba diving trip to a shipwreck in tropical waters. Predictably, their dive takes a turn for the worse, leaving them with limited oxygen and facing serious danger.
Director Johannes Roberts promised that 47 Meters Down: The Wreck would be the most thrilling installment in the series. The movie finished its initial editing in May, after filming began in February 2025, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
47 Meters Down will be streaming for free on Tubi beginning Nov. 3.
