If something unusual happens where you live, who do you turn to? While you should really call the police, according to many ’80s films, there’s only one team of experts in the paranormal who can help. That’s right, the Ghostbusters are back to battling ghosts, and you can watch them for free! This comedy, starring Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray, is often considered one of the most memorable and highly-rated films of the 1980s, and it launched a popular franchise that unfortunately didn’t maintain its quality with each sequel. Despite the sequels not living up to the original, the first Ghostbusters movie is still beloved by fans. If you want to re-watch it for the hundred and first time, or want to show your children a world of spooky ghosts and haunted librarians, it’s currently available to stream for free.

Ghostbusters is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV and the film is returning from the dead on the streaming charts. Ghostbusters is the second most popular movie on the free streaming platform at the time of writing. Released in 1984, Ghostbusters is a certified 80s classic. Alongside Murray and Aykroyd, the film also starred Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis. It was directed by Ivan Reitman, who co-wrote the script with Ramis, Eykroyd, and Moranis. Everyone knows the plot of Ghostbusters. But, just in case you forgot, here’s the official synopsis:

Okay, so I just saw this movie about a group of scientists – played by Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray – who get fired from their jobs at a New York City university. Instead of finding new academic positions, they decide to become Ghostbusters! Basically, they use high-tech equipment to fight ghosts… for a profit. It’s a pretty clever idea, honestly. But things quickly escalate when they accidentally discover a portal to another dimension – a real doorway for evil to come flooding into the city. Suddenly, it’s not about making money anymore; these Ghostbusters have to save New York from total annihilation. It’s a wild ride!

As a huge movie fan, I don’t think I need to tell anyone how great Ghostbusters is, but I will anyway! It’s got an incredible 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Interestingly, while critics loved it, audiences were *slightly* more discerning, giving it an 88% rating. But honestly, it was a massive hit – the top-grossing film of 1984, raking in a whopping $296 million worldwide. Seriously, a classic!

Are More ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequels on the Way?

Columbia Pictures

It’s funny, given all the spooky things the team deals with, the Ghostbusters series just won’t go away. The original crew came back for a follow-up, appropriately named Ghostbusters 2, in 1989, but fans were very split on whether it was good or not. And then there was the 2016 reboot with an all-female cast, which is a topic best left untouched.

Facing financial pressure, Columbia Pictures revived the Ghostbusters series with Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021. While critics were divided, the movie performed well in theaters, which unfortunately led to the less successful Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in 2024. Though the films weren’t critically acclaimed, they were financially profitable, meaning the Ghostbusters franchise is likely to continue indefinitely. An animated film was announced in December 2024, but there haven’t been any updates since then, and a release date remains unknown.
