Before the release of Stranger Things Season 5, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, recommended fans rewatch four important episodes from earlier seasons. They shared this list, along with other helpful information, in a recent interview to get viewers ready for the final season of the sci-fi thriller.
Duffer Brothers reveal Stranger Things episodes to watch before Season 5
The Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross) recently told The Hollywood Reporter that if you’re short on time and want to get ready for the first part of Season 5, these four episodes are the most important to watch to understand what’s coming up.
- Season 2 Episode 4 – “Will the Wise”
- Season 2 Episode 6 – “The Spy”
- Season 4 Episode 7 – “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”
- Season 4 Episode 9 – “The Piggyback”
Matt Duffer explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Season 2 was when he and his brother, Ross, began building out the show’s deeper story and realized it had the potential to continue for many seasons. He noted that they started laying the groundwork for the show’s mythology at that point, which is why it remains so important. He also highlighted Season 4, specifically the ‘Massacre at Hawkins Lab’ episode, as another key moment.
Ross highlighted that Season 4, Episode 7 was significant because it shed light on the origins and rules of the Upside Down, and it delved into the history between Henry/Vecna and Eleven.
Ross suggested that viewers revisiting Stranger Things focus on the first couple of seasons. He explained that the story in Season 5 relies heavily on elements established in Seasons 1 and 2, as the writers intentionally created a circular narrative. They deliberately left some mysteries unanswered in those earlier seasons to be revisited later.
He explained that he and Matt intentionally left some story elements unanswered in the first season, even before they knew if the show would get a second one. As an example, he pointed to the mystery surrounding the Upside Down and Will’s initial disappearance, which is why the new season starts with a look back at Will’s experiences there.
