Elden Ring is a standout game from the last ten years, thanks to its massive open world, rewarding loot, and challenging bosses. If you enjoyed that sense of scale but don’t have hundreds of hours to invest, these four games offer a similar experience in a more manageable timeframe. They still require a significant time commitment, but none will take nearly as long to complete as Elden Ring. While none perfectly replicate Elden Ring’s unique atmosphere, they all share elements that fans will appreciate.
Here are four shorter games that can satisfy that Elden Ring itch.
4) Ghost of Yōtei
Unlike Elden Ring, Ghost of Yōtei emphasizes stealth gameplay. It does incorporate more magic, similar to Ghost of Tsushima, and hints at some of the mechanics found in Elden Ring. However, the game truly shines with its beautiful open world, making exploration a real pleasure.
If you enjoy this type of game, Rise of the Rōnin could be a good fit. Regardless, none of these games will take more than around 50 hours to complete, unless you aim for full completion. That’s much shorter than the time needed for Elden Ring, making Yōtei, Tsushima, and Rōnin worthwhile choices.
3) Lies of P
Lies of P delivers thrilling, fast-paced action role-playing gameplay. While it shares similarities with FromSoftware titles like Elden Ring and Bloodborne, it feels particularly reminiscent of Bloodborne in its quick combat style, firmly placing it within that challenging genre.
Though Lies of P doesn’t feature a huge open world, its levels are large and detailed, offering plenty of areas to discover. This design choice also makes the game relatively short to complete, even for players new to the Soulslike genre.
If you enjoy the challenging gameplay of games like those made by FromSoftware and are interested in a Steampunk setting, Lies of P is a fantastic choice. Even if you’re on the fence, it’s worth playing just to experience the wild cutscene that sets up a truly over-the-top sequel.
2) Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Despite boasting an impressive team – including artist Todd McFarlane and composer Grant Kirkhope – Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is often seen as a disappointment. The game aimed to deliver a deep, single-player experience that felt similar to a large-scale online multiplayer game, but ultimately fell short of expectations.
The game was intended to be a solo experience similar to World of Warcraft, taking place in a new world co-created by author R.A. Salvatore. While the gameplay and graphics were excellent, other aspects of the game were just average. Combined with some unfortunate business choices, this ultimately led to the studio’s closure.
Good news – you don’t need to stress about finding your next adventure! If you’re searching for a captivating game with plenty of quests and battles, KOA is a great choice. It’s more reminiscent of the original God of War games, but players who enjoy the world of Elden Ring will also find a lot to love.
1) The First Berserker: Khazan
Out of these four games, Khazan most closely resembles Elden Ring. The developers at Neople have stated that Elden Ring was a key inspiration, and you can also see elements of combat similar to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The boss battles in Khazan are truly exceptional, ranking among the best in the genre. They really demonstrate how well-designed the combat system is, and feel remarkably similar to those found in games made by FromSoftware. While not flawless, they come very close to achieving that level of quality.
Although Khazan’s overall story and world aren’t fully developed, it boasts a beautiful anime art style that makes it stand out. Plus, at roughly 35 hours long, it’s a manageable game that won’t take up too much of your time, leaving you free to play something else.
