Alan Ritchson’s sci-fi action film, War Machine, leaves some major questions unanswered, and these need to be resolved if Netflix and Lionsgate decide to make a follow-up movie. While the studios haven’t announced any plans for a sequel yet, the film’s ending strongly suggests a continuation of the story.
It seems likely that a sequel will happen. War Machine has been incredibly popular on Netflix since its release, becoming one of the platform’s biggest successes this past year. With so many people watching and enjoying it, the positive feedback and high viewership numbers make a second installment of War Machine more probable.
Having a plan for the sequel to War Machine, as Ritchson and director Patrick Hughes do, is a major advantage. While they haven’t revealed specifics, they’ll likely expand on the most exciting parts of the 2026 action movie and, hopefully, answer some of the questions left unresolved in the first film.
4. What Is 81’s Name?
A curious detail in the film is that War Machine directly asks for 81’s name, but never receives an answer. In the closing scene, a fellow Ranger lists the names of everyone in the helicopter, yet no one ever learns the name of Alan Ritchson’s character. Having been identified only by his number during RASP training, War Machine ultimately doesn’t reveal 81’s name to anyone.
It would be almost comical if the show never revealed who ’81’ really is. He’d become more of a legendary figure, recognized only by his number, rather than a person with a normal name. That was actually the goal, according to show creator Hughes, who told ScreenRant that the decision to keep 81’s name a secret was inspired by his fondness for Westerns.
I loved watching Westerns as a kid, and I’ve always been drawn to the classic story of the lone wanderer – the mysterious stranger, often called the ‘man with no name.’ It’s a type of story I find really compelling.
As a huge fan, I think that mystery surrounding the character’s identity worked great for the first movie, but a sequel to War Machine would really struggle to keep 81’s name under wraps. He’s become a genuine hero in this conflict, and honestly, people – both soldiers fighting and everyone back home – would want to know who he is. It feels like Ritchson’s character can’t just be ‘a number’ indefinitely; he deserves to be recognized for what he’s doing.
3. Are The Machines Sentient Beings Or Controlled By Aliens?
The alien robots in War Machine aren’t explored in much detail. The film mainly follows the perspective of 81 as he struggles to survive the attack and protect his team. We learn how strong the robots are and what their weaknesses are, but we don’t get a clear understanding of their origins or overall purpose.
It’s unclear whether the machines are piloted by aliens or if they’re self-aware like robots from a science fiction movie. The film War Machine doesn’t offer any clues. While this doesn’t matter much in the first movie, knowing the truth about these machines will be crucial as the war between humans and them escalates.
If aliens are piloting or inhabiting these machines, what do they look like, and what are they good and bad at? Could they live on Earth without relying on the machines for survival? Alternatively, if the robots are self-aware, that opens up a whole new set of questions.
If humanity wants to succeed in this war, it needs to understand its enemy. That’s why the new film, War Machine 2, explores the machines that threaten to destroy us all.
2. Why Did The Machines Come To Earth?
It’s unclear if these machines are living beings or are operated by aliens, but the biggest mystery is why they came to Earth. The movie War Machine doesn’t offer any explanation. It simply shows that hundreds of these machines crashed on Earth and immediately began attacking people.
It’s unclear what their motives are. There’s no evidence they’re here to exploit Earth’s resources, enslave people, or even simply to destroy us for fun. Are they eliminating humanity as part of some larger, unknown plan for the planet?
The conflict between humans and machines is essential to the plot of War Machine 2. While a human resistance would be interesting on its own, the movie needs to explain why the robots are fighting. We need to understand their goals – are they trying to take over Earth, or simply eliminate a potential future threat? Giving the robots a clear motivation is crucial.
Honestly, I’m still a bit lost after watching War Machine. To really get what’s going on with these machines and why they’ve come to Earth, we need some kind of explanation – whether it’s communication with them, or just a better understanding of their motives. Until we figure that out, the sequel feels incomplete. But if they can deliver on that missing piece, I think a follow-up could really clarify the whole conflict and make the story truly compelling.
1. Is 81’s Brother Really Dead?

In War Machine, it seems clear what happened to Jai Courtney’s character, 81’s brother. He was seriously wounded during the attack in Afghanistan and carried most of the way to safety by Jack Ritchson’s character, who then collapsed. Although Ritchson’s character believed he was still alive when he left him, 81 was later told by his superiors that his brother had died sometime between being reached by the military and 81 waking up.
The death of 81’s brother is a key part of War Machine’s story. From the beginning, I found the circumstances surrounding his death suspicious, even though the movie doesn’t hint at anything being wrong. Casting a well-known actor like Courtney in a minor role, and then having the character die off-screen without ever showing a body, just doesn’t feel right.
I don’t know why the military might have pretended 81’s brother died, or how that could connect to a potential War Machine sequel, but I have a strong feeling he’s still alive. Maybe he was secretly rescued as part of a government experiment. He was very determined to participate in RASP and wanted to be right in the middle of combat, which could have led to his recruitment by a different, perhaps more specialized, military unit – one that might know something about the new enemy we’re facing.
As a fan, I’d be absolutely floored if Courtney’s character turned out to be alive! It would be an amazing twist and I’d love to see her team up with 81 to fight those alien machines in the next movie. But if the creators have decided he’s really gone, I hope the next War Machine film makes that crystal clear and puts all these rumors to rest, especially if they’re planning more sequels. It would be good to have closure.
