4 Action Shows Better Than The Boys

While The Boys is a fantastic action series and one of the best in recent years, a few other shows are even better. Since it first aired in 2019, The Boys has become incredibly popular – it’s actually more well-known than the comic books it’s based on, which explains all the excitement for season 5.

The ending of The Boys season 4 has built a lot of anticipation for the final confrontation between Billy Butcher and Homelander. The show’s popularity is also evident in the number of spin-offs being created, proving it’s a successful and well-liked superhero action series.

While The Boys is popular, other shows have similar qualities. Over the past few years, several streaming series have featured superheroes, been based on comics, included extreme violence, used parody, or combined these elements. Here are a few shows that are just as good, or even better, than The Boys.

Arcane

While Arcane is quite different from The Boys, its overall quality makes it a stronger show. That said, they do share some similarities. Both series focus on characters with special powers and explore political themes as a core part of their stories.

However, Arcane truly excels in these areas. Being animated gives Arcane a significant advantage over The Boys, allowing for a much more artistic and visually stunning experience. The animation quality in Arcane is exceptional, rarely seen in either television or film.

Unlike The Boys, Arcane‘s action scenes are particularly striking. While The Boys benefits from having more developed characters thanks to its longer run, Arcane presents its political themes with greater clarity, avoiding the comedic and satirical approach used in The Boys.

Invincible

Both Invincible and The Boys share a lot of similarities: they’re both Prime Video shows based on unconventional comics, both center around superheroes, and both blend intense, violent action with dark humor and satire. Because of these common elements, it’s natural to compare them. Ultimately, Invincible edges out The Boys as the slightly better show.

What really sets Invincible apart is its grand scope. Unlike The Boys, which tells a more personal story with political undertones, Invincible features a sprawling, galaxy-wide narrative of heroes and villains. While The Boys does have global consequences, its tighter focus on a specific group of characters keeps it feeling more realistic compared to Invincible‘s epic, larger-than-life scale.

Season 3 of Invincible is arguably its best yet, featuring some of the highest-rated superhero TV episodes ever. In fact, it surpasses every episode of The Boys in quality. Like Arcane, its animated format allows the show to effectively portray its large scope and epic storytelling.

Both Invincible and The Boys are fantastic superhero stories, but they differ in how they achieve greatness. Invincible is based on a comic book series widely considered a masterpiece, and the TV show successfully brings that story to life. While The Boys is an example of an adaptation that surpasses its source material, Invincible’s show is still considered the better of the two.

Fallout

Unlike shows like The Boys, Fallout doesn’t focus on superheroes. Instead, it’s a funny, often dark, and surprisingly heartfelt adventure filled with action and well-developed characters in a fascinating world. Many consider Fallout to be one of the best adaptations of a video game ever made, ranking it alongside Arcane for its ability to capture the unique spirit of the original games.

Unlike The Boys, which satirizes real-world issues and the superhero genre as a whole, Fallout has a more unique feel. Both shows, however, deliver impressive and realistically violent action scenes.

As we’ve touched on, Fallout simply feels more distinct than The Boys, which is why it currently ranks higher. However, if The Boys season 5 ends strongly, it could reclaim the top spot before Fallout season 3 arrives.

Daredevil

Disney

As a huge fan of superhero shows, I honestly think Netflix’s Daredevil stands alone. It’s the only Marvel TV series that really committed to being dark, brutal, and realistic. That’s why, in my opinion, it’s the best Marvel show ever made. Even compared to something like The Boys, which also goes for a violent edge, Daredevil just feels more impactful. The Boys definitely has its fun with over-the-top humor, but Daredevil‘s consistent quality and seriousness make it a better viewing experience overall.

Many fans consider Daredevil to be one of the greatest superhero TV shows ever made, and with good reason. While The Boys has the potential to reach that level with its upcoming fifth season, Daredevil currently stands out thanks to its gripping storylines, realistic feel, and fantastic performances.

Many fans agree that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are perfect choices for their superhero roles. Their acting is central to the success of Daredevil, similar to how Karl Urban and Antony Starr power The Boys. However, Cox and D’Onofrio are generally seen as more iconic because their characters’ intense rivalry is the core of Daredevil‘s story.

While The Boys frequently introduces new threats and allies for Homelander, like Soldier Boy and Stormfront, Daredevil consistently centers around Matt Murdock’s fight against Kingpin, who remains the main villain. Considering all of Daredevil’s strengths as a superhero show, it’s difficult to definitively say that The Boys is superior.
