3I/ATLAS, which some have long thought might be alien technology, was struck directly by a powerful solar flare. Recent reports suggest this interstellar object could be significantly larger than originally estimated.
Around the end of September, the Sun released a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME), which is an eruption of plasma and magnetic fields. This blast headed straight for the large object as it travels through the solar system at about 137,000 mph.
We’ve observed comets in our solar system survive similar events previously, but it’s never been seen before that a comet from another star system could withstand a close encounter with the Sun. This is a truly unprecedented event.
In 2007, NASA’s STEREO A spacecraft observed comet Encke. It saw the comet’s tail disappear and then rapidly reappear following an impact from a coronal mass ejection (CME).
Researchers are keeping a close watch to see if the explosion changes its path or releases additional substance, which could provide further insights into what it’s made of.

3I/ATLAS could be way bigger than believed
So, I was reading up on that weird interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, and it turns out things are getting even more interesting. Avi Loeb, the Harvard astrophysicist who’s been suggesting it might be some kind of alien tech, just said it could be way bigger than we initially thought! It’s pretty wild to think about, and I’m definitely keeping an eye on this. You can find more info about his theories here.
After studying its path and the gases it releases, Loeb calculates that the mass of 3I/ATLAS is over 33 billion tons – a surprisingly large amount.
In a blog post, he questioned whether 3I/ATLAS is a remarkably large comet with an uncommon chemical makeup and a very infrequent path, or if it could be alien technology. He wrote, “Is 3I/ATLAS an unusually massive comet with an unusual chemical composition on an unusually rare trajectory or alien technology?”
In both situations, the object was able to release carbon dioxide and water ices that had built up on its frozen surface as it traveled through space, both within our solar system and between stars. We shouldn’t determine what 3I/ATLAS is made of based solely on its outer layer – just as we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The composition of its surface isn’t necessarily representative of the whole object. This is because, like a book’s cover, the surface can be misleading.
Loeb suggests that if its size extends beyond three miles, the possibility of it being formed naturally from materials found in space becomes improbable.
The astrophysicist has gone even further, proposing that 3I/ATLAS might be a man-made object, perhaps a probe designed to study Earth. In a research paper he helped write, he detailed two potential scenarios if the object is actually intelligent: it could be acting with good intentions, or its intentions could be harmful.

At the same time, other scientists, like Susanne Pfalzner from Forschungszentrum Jülich, have proposed that this object might even function as a “planet seed,” transporting substances that could initiate the development of planets around new stars.
NASA, however, insists that 3I/ATLAS is simply a comet, not an alien mothership heading towards Earth. Despite this, the agency recently shared potential signs of past alien life on Mars, which has only fueled the current wave of speculation.
Even if the 3I/ATLAS comet doesn’t signal the start of a conflict with extraterrestrials, NASA has indicated it wants to send nuclear weapons to destroy a potentially dangerous asteroid – one capable of causing widespread destruction – that’s projected to hit the Moon in 2032.
Over the next few months, as 3I/ATLAS moves further away from Mars, both scientists and those who speculate about mysteries in space will be keenly observing it, hoping to uncover more about this puzzling object.
