35 Years Later, Dragon Ball Officially Reveals Akira Toriyama’s Secret to Mastering Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta

The Toriyama Archives recently highlighted a brilliant example of how to vividly portray beloved characters in comic books, dating back 35 years.

A recent post on the official Dragon Ball website’s Toriyama Archives shared a classic art guide originally published over thirty years ago. This guide first appeared in 1991 as a pullout page in the Dragon Ball Z Anime Special II, teaching fans how to draw three of the series’ most beloved characters.

I was so excited to find this amazing guide! It’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to draw Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta, and it comes straight from the legendary Akira Toriyama himself! Seriously, it’s packed with incredible insights – I never knew things like Piccolo’s nose appearing crooked was just a shadow trick! He also explains that the core approach to drawing the faces of all three characters is actually the same, which is a huge revelation. You absolutely have to check out the guide below – it’s a game changer!

The Toriyama Archives Give Dragon Ball Fans Another Classic Piece of Long-Lost Franchise Media

The Toriyama Archives is a popular part of the Dragon Ball website, updated with new content about every two days. Each update gives fans a look at classic artwork, early sketches of well-known characters, and other rare media from the franchise that they wouldn’t normally have access to.

Past issues of the Toriyama Archives have explored the extensive history of Dragon Ball, including many sketches and ideas that Akira Toriyama, the series’ creator, never finished or published. For example, the April issue featured one of Toriyama’s early drafts.

Later versions of the Toriyama Archives have shown numerous early designs for Goku, the main character of Dragon Ball. One design, among many, depicted him simply wearing a uniform.

Good news for fans! A new Dragon Ball Super anime is in production. It’s called Dragon Ball Super 2: Galactic Patrol, and it will cover the popular ‘Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga’ storyline from the Dragon Ball Super manga.

This new installment continues the story from the last series and focuses on the fight against Moro, a powerful alien wizard. After being trapped for thousands of years, Moro breaks free and starts a destructive campaign across the galaxy.

Before long, Goku and Vegeta are recruited as Galactic Patrol members and set off on another mission to defeat a powerful new enemy.
