Kurt Russell‘s new Western film seems to be bringing renewed attention to one of his older, well-known movies.
Currently, Russell is starring with Michelle Pfeiffer in Taylor Sheridan’s new series, The Madison. At the same time, his classic action Western, Tombstone, from 1993, is gaining renewed popularity.
Even though Tombstone was released over three decades ago, it’s still popular with viewers and ranked as the fourth most-watched movie on AMC+ in the US as of March 24, 2026. With Russell’s The Madison also performing well on Paramount+, Tombstone is experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
Kurt Russell plays Wyatt Earp in Tombstone, alongside Val Kilmer, who received praise for his portrayal of Doc Holliday. Though credited to director George P. Cosmatos, Russell secretly directed many scenes of the film, which famously depicts the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
When Tombstone came out in 1993, reviews were mixed, but the film has become more popular over time. It currently has a 76% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers absolutely love the exciting Western, giving it a 93% score on the site’s audience review meter.
Even though Tombstone is considered a classic Western, Russell feels the movie could have been even stronger. He believes the script was unnecessarily cut down due to a change in directors and limited funding.
Kurt Russell recently shared that he’s still unhappy with how the film Tombstone turned out, despite its popularity. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he believes the movie had the potential to be even better – not just a great Western, but a truly great film overall.
Russell acknowledged that Tombstone had a significant impact, which he appreciated. However, he also felt it could have been even stronger.
In a 2025 review, ScreenRant hailed Tombstone as one of the best Westerns ever made, noting that its optimistic portrayal of the Old West and clear-cut story of good versus evil were unusual even in 1993, and have become even rarer since.
The article notes that Tombstone is often considered the final great traditional Western, which explains why it continues to gain popularity with viewers over time.
It’s perfect timing that the classic film Tombstone is currently popular on streaming services, especially as Russell is experiencing a resurgence with the new Western film The Madison, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.
