Even though it ended three years ago, many still consider this acclaimed HBO series to be one of the best shows ever made. Its departure in 2023 left a significant gap in HBO’s programming that the network hasn’t quite managed to fill, despite its many award-winning performances and talented cast.
Many shows and movies have tried to capture the magic of this beloved drama, and even HBO has launched a similar series, but nothing has quite filled the gap left by its premature ending.
Succession Ended Too Early While Still In Its Prime After 4 Seasons
HBO’s Succession is widely considered one of the network’s best shows, and its impact is still felt years after it ended. Having won 19 Emmy Awards, including three for Outstanding Drama Series, the show is increasingly seen as a major loss for HBO.
I was a huge fan of Succession, and I was surprised when Jesse Armstrong, the creator, decided to end it after four seasons. He felt like the story had run its course, and honestly, it felt right. I remember when it first came out in 2018 – it was getting a lot of buzz and good reviews, but it quickly became one of the most talked-about shows on TV. It really deserved all the praise, with a fantastic 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes!
Although Succession has clearly inspired the style of films like Blackberry and Mountainhead, and shows like Industry, it’s worth noting that the show itself borrowed from other sources. Director Adam McKay, known for his darkly comedic 2015 film The Big Short – which also mixed corporate drama with humor – directed the pilot episode of Succession in 2018, suggesting a similar approach.
Ultimately, Succession became a truly exceptional show due to the skillful direction of Mark Mylod (who directed over a third of the series) and the outstanding writing led by Armstrong. The show also benefited from perfect casting, assembling a remarkable ensemble – including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen, among others – who each brought unique and captivating personalities to their roles.
HBO Needs To Make Succession Season 5 Or A Spinoff Series
HBO consistently delivers popular and critically acclaimed TV shows. Following the conclusion of Succession, hits like The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, The Penguin, The Last of Us, Hacks, and True Detective have kept audiences engaged. But it’s fun to consider what might have happened if Succession had continued for two more seasons, building on the shocking events of its fourth season finale.
Let’s be real, HBO is clearly trying to recapture the magic of Succession. The fact they had the same writer/director behind that disastrous attempt at a similar movie last year speaks volumes. There’s still a huge appetite for that world, and plenty of stories left to tell. Honestly, it feels like the future of Succession – whether it’s a fifth season or a spin-off focusing on the new power players – rests entirely with Jesse Armstrong. If that’s true, HBO needs to throw everything they have at getting that team back together, and they need to do it quickly.
