This week’s movie selections on Prime Video are a diverse mix, ideal for film lovers who enjoy exploring different types of movies. One of the biggest advantages of Amazon’s Prime Video is its vast library of content. As always, April brought both new additions and removals from the platform.
With so many movies constantly being added and removed, finding something good to watch on Prime Video can be overwhelming. Here are three critically acclaimed films that stand out – they’re all excellent and even earned awards recognition, with one receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Streaming recommendations often suggest mindless entertainment, but this week’s Amazon Prime selections are different. These three movies are designed to engage your mind, offering thought-provoking and captivating experiences from both classic and contemporary filmmaking. Best of all, they’re genuinely enjoyable and far from dull.
3. The Third Man (1949)
This week, we’re starting with a classic from the 1940s: one of the best noir films ever made. The Third Man, directed by Carol Reed, is a suspenseful, post-war mystery featuring the incredible talents of Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. While famous for its striking visuals, the film also boasts a brilliantly written story.
If you tend to avoid black and white films, make an exception for The Third Man. It’s as captivating today as it was years ago. Its dark story and unexpected turns are better than many recent movies. While Prime Video has plenty of classic films, The Third Man is truly one of the most important.
2. American Fiction (2023)
Okay, so a lot of great movies compete for Best Picture every year, but I really think everyone should check out American Fiction. It was honestly one of my favorite films of 2023! You can stream it on Prime Video right now, and it’s just brilliant. It feels so fresh and relevant, tackling issues in a way that’s both funny and thought-provoking. It’s one of those movies that really sticks with you – a truly important film, in my opinion.
Jeffrey Wright delivers a truly outstanding performance, and the movie manages to find humor even while tackling a serious topic. While it didn’t win the top prize, its Best Adapted Screenplay win is a more fitting recognition of its quality – it’s a flawless adaptation and will likely be considered one of the best films of the decade’s beginning.
1. Mickey 17 (2025)
After the huge success of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho’s latest film, Mickey 17, is a very different kind of movie. This science fiction story, starring Robert Pattinson, delves into complex ideas about who we are and how modern life can strip away our humanity. While critics had mixed opinions, many viewers actually found it to be a compelling and thought-provoking film.
Science fiction often struggles to attract a broad audience. While the futuristic settings and technology are interesting, they usually serve to explore deeper themes. Mickey 17 is a great example – it’s another excellent sci-fi film on Prime Video that will likely only appeal to a dedicated fanbase, simply because many viewers won’t connect with its ideas.
