With lots of great movies playing now, I think these three are especially good choices to see this Thanksgiving. The holiday is a perfect time to head to the movies with family and friends and enjoy some quality time together.
Thanksgiving is always a popular time to go to the movies, and this year promises to be the same. I’ve picked out three films that should appeal to a lot of different people: an action-packed blockbuster, a fantasy musical, and the sequel to a beloved animated movie.
3. Wicked: For Good
The highly anticipated sequel to the popular musical film, Wicked, arrives in 2025 with Wicked: For Good. Though it doesn’t quite capture the same lightheartedness as the original, the sequel compensates by deepening the emotional connections and character development established in the first film. Instead of expanding the world around the story, this movie focuses more intently on the characters themselves.
The heart of Wicked: For Good remains the evolving relationship between Glinda and Elphaba, and the film delivers spectacular musical numbers with memorable songs. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo give outstanding performances, both as actors and singers. By weaving in familiar elements from The Wizard of Oz alongside the main story, this film is truly a must-see.
2. Zootopia 2
This Thanksgiving, Zootopia 2 is the perfect movie for a family outing. The highly anticipated sequel comes nine years after the original Zootopia became a global success, earning over $1 billion worldwide. This time, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) team up to solve a new mystery involving a character named Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan).
Just like the first movie, “Zootopia 2” is full of surprises and takes place in a beautifully animated world that’s even bigger this time. The connection between Judy and Nick is stronger than ever, and the central mystery is really captivating. Overall, it’s set to be one of the biggest movies of the year, making it a great choice for Thanksgiving weekend.
1. The Running Man
Last up is an action movie perfect for dads who love Top Gun this Thanksgiving. The Running Man, starring Glen Powell, is a thrilling adaptation of Stephen King’s story and a significant improvement over the earlier version with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Powell is incredibly charismatic throughout the film.
The action sequences are inventive, and the story cleverly combines a futuristic, dystopian setting with themes that resonate today. The Running Man is a thrilling, fast-paced experience, and even though not every concept fully succeeds, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of Ben Richards being hunted across the country as part of a twisted reality TV show makes for a captivating adventure. It’s definitely worth seeing in theaters this Thanksgiving.
