Uncharted Is a Great Indiana Jones Replacement
Released in 2022, Uncharted is an action-packed adventure movie inspired by the popular video game series. Tom Holland plays a young treasure hunter named Nathan Drake, who sets off on a dangerous worldwide quest to find Ferdinand Magellan’s lost treasure. He teams up with Sully, played by Mark Wahlberg, and Chloe Frazer, played by Sophia Ali, along the way. They face off against Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), a wealthy villain who believes the treasure rightfully belongs to his family. Tati Gabrielle and Alana Boden also appear in supporting roles.
If you’re a fan of the adventurous treasure hunts in the Indiana Jones movies, Uncharted is a great choice for a more recent adventure. The film is packed with exciting action, including an incredible pirate ship battle towards the end. Plus, Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg have a really entertaining, often combative, chemistry as partners who constantly disagree.
While critics weren’t impressed with Uncharted – giving it only a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – audiences really enjoyed it. They gave the film an 89% audience score and an average rating of 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb. This positive reaction from viewers helped Uncharted become a box office success, earning over $400 million worldwide, despite the critical reception.
If you didn’t get a chance to see Uncharted in theaters, or just want to watch it again, it’s now available to stream on Tubi for free. Although the movie still has fans, Sony hasn’t announced any plans for future Uncharted films. With several games in the series yet to be adapted for the big screen, there’s potential for more movies, but it’s uncertain if they’ll happen. Regardless, Uncharted is a great choice for a free weekend stream.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Is an Underrated Spy-Thriller
Henry Cavill is famous for playing Superman, but he’s also taken on other action roles. In 2015, he starred in Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., a remake of the classic 1960s TV show. The movie follows Agent Solo as he’s forced to work with a KGB agent, Ilya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), and a new recruit, Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander), to stop the evil Victoria Vinceguerra (Elizabeth Debicki). Hugh Grant and Jared Harris also appear in supporting roles.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. fully embraces the over-the-top style of 1960s spy films, both celebrating and playfully mocking the original TV series. Director Guy Ritchie brings his recognizable flair to the movie, giving it a unique feel compared to other spy adventures. Henry Cavill also shines, delivering a particularly charismatic performance.
As a big fan of spy films, I was really disappointed that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. didn’t connect with audiences when it came out. While critics gave it a decent score – around 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, which wasn’t far off the 73% audiences gave it – and it scored a 7.2/10 on IMDb, it just didn’t make enough money. With a budget of about $80 million, it only grossed around $110 million worldwide, which meant it was considered a box office flop and quickly faded from view. It’s a shame, because I thought it had potential!
After eleven years, people are revisiting The Man From U.N.C.L.E. on streaming platforms and realizing it’s much better than many thought when it came out in 2015. If you’re a fan of Henry Cavill, Guy Ritchie’s filmmaking, or spy thrillers, you’ll likely enjoy this movie, especially since it’s currently available to watch for free on YouTube Movies. Though a sequel seems unlikely after all this time, the original film remains a fun and entertaining watch.
Mean Girls Is Still an All-Time Classic
It’s amazing to think it’s been twenty-two years since the original Mean Girls movie came out! The film, adapted by Tina Fey from Rosalind Wiseman’s Queen Bees and Wannabes, is a classic high school comedy that still feels relevant today. It follows Cady, who starts attending public high school after being homeschooled in Africa. She tries to navigate the social scene, but quickly faces pressure from a popular and intimidating group of girls known as “The Plastics.” When Cady and her friends try to get revenge on Regina George, the leader of The Plastics, she starts to lose sight of who she is.
Mean Girls is widely considered a classic comedy. Though some of the jokes haven’t aged perfectly, the movie still realistically portrays the challenges and social dynamics of high school. Rachel McAdams is especially memorable as Regina George, often cited as one of the best comedic villains ever. The 2004 film also helped launch the careers of Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and Lizzy Caplan, and features appearances by comedic talents like Amy Poehler, Tim Meadows, and Tina Fey.
Over the years, Mean Girls has seen several adaptations, including a Broadway musical and a film version of that musical. However, the original 2004 movie remains the most popular. Critics generally loved it, giving it an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it at 66%. IMDb users give it an average of 7.1 out of 10. Despite a modest $18 million budget, Mean Girls was a huge success when it came out in 2004, earning over $130 million at the box office.
If a movie is still being quoted years after it comes out, it’s worth watching again. Luckily, you can currently watch the original Mean Girls for free on Pluto TV – you don’t need a subscription to Netflix, Paramount+, or any other major streaming service. The 2024 remake, which is based on the Broadway musical, is available on Netflix or Paramount+ if you’re interested, but most people agree the original is still the better choice.
