2K Reportedly Fires Boss At Live-Service Project Ethos Studio After Lukewarm Response

2K Games has announced a significant shift in leadership at Project Ethos developer, 31st Union. According to reports from Kotaku, studio head Michael Condrey, renowned for his work on Dead Space and Call of Duty series, is moving into an advisory position before a likely departure. However, it’s important to note that 2K Games has not explicitly stated that Condrey was fired, but rather emphasized their continued dedication to the game and the studio.

2K’s representative expressed appreciation to Michael Condrey for the commitment, enthusiasm, and tireless effort he put into assembling a remarkable team and defining the vision of 31st Union. The announcement also revealed that Condrey will be stepping down from his role temporarily, taking on an advisory position for Project Ethos instead.

2K emphasizes their unwavering dedication to the continued progression of Project Ethos, as well as the team and creative environment at the 31st Union studio.

In November, Strauss Zelnick, head of Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of 2K), expressed his immense pride in the teams at 31st Union and Project Ethos. Towards the end of 2024, 31st Union conducted an open testing for their game, and Zelnick noted that the team has been excited about the responses they received. “We’ve had a strong beginning, and there’s even more to look forward to,” he added.

According to TopMob’s hands-on review, Project Ethos, the first live-service game by 2K, shows promise but struggles with a confusion about its own identity.

The following day, Take-Two Interactive will reveal their earnings for February 6th. If we uncover any fresh insights concerning Project Ethos, we’ll share an update on its current status.

Condrey is primarily recognized for his contributions to the Dead Space and Call of Duty series. In 2018, he departed from Sledgehammer Games and founded a new studio under 2K. Meanwhile, Glen Schofield, another co-founder at Sledgehammer, also left in 2018 and later established Striking Distance Studios. However, following the underwhelming debut of The Callisto Protocol, he parted ways with that company as well.
