The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, brings back Alfie Williams as a grown-up Spike, who was last seen with the dangerous Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) and his crew. Directed by Nia DaCosta (with original director Danny Boyle planning to return for the final film), The Bone Temple is shaping up to be a surprisingly strange and bold sequel – and likely one that will divide audiences – compared to the 2025 blockbuster.
Actor Williams recently discussed his role in The Bone Temple with NME, covering his character’s development and his physical preparation for filming 28 Years Later. He explained that his character has changed significantly since the first film. While he initially matured into a strong leader, the events of the new story force him to confront a different kind of threat – other people – causing him to revert to the frightened person he once was.
I’m really fascinated by what Danny Boyle is doing with this new installment. At first, my character, Spike, is this quiet but determined kid from an island, and he really steps up to look after his mum when things get crazy with the infected coming from the mainland. But it sounds like joining up with this Jimmy character and his followers changes him – he kind of retreats back into himself. I’ve been thinking a lot about the physical demands of this franchise, and here’s what I had to say about that…
Honestly, there was so much running on set! I’m definitely not in peak physical condition, and it showed! Danny really put us through it – he had us doing tons of squats before every scene, just to make sure we were winded. Which, let’s be real, wasn’t hard because we were already running non-stop! It was exhausting, but in a good way, you know?
Nia DaCosta ‘Asked For More Infected’ in ‘The Bone Temple’ Script

Sony Pictures
At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, director DaCosta shared that making The Bone Temple was a particularly enjoyable experience. She did, however, ask for one significant change to the script written by Alex Garland.
When Alex Garland gives you a script, it’s instantly impressive – it barely needs any changes. My main addition was simply requesting more scenes with infected individuals. Beyond that, I started with a fantastic cast and had the freedom to fill out the rest of the roles.
I came into the project with a couple of existing locations already established. I had the freedom to develop all the others. There was some overlap in our work – for example, with the character Samson, Danny and I would discuss the visual style together. But ultimately, Danny and I have very different shooting styles.
Director Remi DaCosta, known for her previous work including Hedda with Tessa Thompson, understands the significance of taking on The Bone Temple. She explained, “28 Days Later was hugely influential to me when I was growing up. I owned the DVD and watched it constantly.”
I immediately connected with Cillian Murphy, and Danny Boyle is a truly unique and unconventional director. What struck me was that no other filmmaker could capture his vision, and that was the core of my idea for the movie. I told them, ‘I don’t think anyone else could pull this off, and I certainly wouldn’t try to imitate anyone else. Here’s my take on the film – what are your thoughts?’
