As a die-hard fan of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s work, especially the gritty and gripping “28 Days Later” franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of “28 Years Later”. The return of Boyle and Garland to their creative roles, coupled with an impressive cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman, and Jack O’Connell, promises a thrilling continuation of the story.
Slip on your running sneakers and prepare yourself for re-entering the swift-moving undead universe created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, as “28 Years Later” unveils its first official trailer.
In the third movie of the “28 Days Later” series, Jim Boyle and Alex Garland resume their roles as director and writer, after they were executive producers for the 2007 follow-up titled “28 Weeks Later,” directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
28 Years Later brings back Boyle and Garland to oversee the project, with Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Jim from the original series. In 28 Days Later, Jim was a bike messenger who woke up from a coma to find the world overtaken by a zombie virus caused by aggression. However, in the latest trailer, it seems that Jim’s character has contracted the virus himself, and is only shown once in a shocking scene depicting his body ravaged by the Rage Virus. His name does not appear on promotional posters, suggesting he may not be a central figure this time around. Nevertheless, Murphy will be involved as an executive producer for the production.
New arrivals to the franchise are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman, and Jack O’Connell. (Here, “franchise” refers to a series of films or shows, “newcomers” means new members in this specific series.)
28 Years Later marks the beginning of a three-part movie series, initiated by Boyle and Garland, where the movies will be produced consecutively. This initial film will be followed by “28 Years Later II: The Bone Temple,” which is the second part directed by Nia DaCosta in this trilogy.
The movie was filmed by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, utilizing an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Although a detailed plot summary hasn’t been shared yet, the director, Garland, mentioned that he drew inspiration from Ken Loach’s 1969 coming-of-age film “Kes” for this project.
Andew MacDonald and Peter Rice are joining forces with Garland and Boyle as fellow producers for the upcoming movie titled “28 Years Later.” This production is a collaborative effort between Columbia Pictures, BFI, DNA Films, and Decibel Films. The anticipated release date is June 20, 2025.
