’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’s Box Office Barely Passes Oscar Favorite ‘Quiz Show’

Ralph Fiennes is consistently praised for his acting, and his recent film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is no exception. However, positive reviews haven’t translated into big box office numbers. While Bone Temple has earned $56.6 million worldwide, it only brought in $24.84 million domestically. This is just slightly more than his 1994 film, Quiz Show, which received four Academy Award nominations and made $24.78 million in the US.

Despite receiving four Academy Award nominations and a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film Quiz Show didn’t win any Oscars. Surprisingly, Ralph Fiennes wasn’t nominated for his performance. The film received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Screenplay. Ultimately, Forrest Gump won Best Picture and Best Director (for Robert Zemeckis), as well as Best Screenplay, and Martin Landau from Ed Wood took home the award for Best Supporting Actor.

The movie Quiz Show tells the story of a popular game show contestant in the 1950s whose success was overshadowed by a scandal. It turned out some contestants were receiving the answers beforehand, all to create more exciting television.

How Has Ralph Fiennes Never Won an Oscar?

Sony Pictures

Ralph Fiennes first gained widespread recognition in 1993 with his chilling portrayal of Amon Göth, a Nazi officer, in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, though Tommy Lee Jones won the award that year for The Fugitive. Schindler’s List was a major success at the Oscars, winning awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1996, Fiennes received another Oscar nomination, this time as Best Actor, for his work in The English Patient. While he didn’t win, The English Patient itself took home awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, which Juliette Binoche received.

Ralph Fiennes didn’t receive another Best Actor Oscar nomination for almost twenty years, finally being recognized in 2023 for his role in Conclave. However, the film only won one Oscar, for Best Adapted Screenplay. Surprisingly, despite seven nominations, Fiennes hasn’t won a Golden Globe award. He did, however, win a BAFTA award for his performance in Schindler’s List.

How Will ‘Bone Temple’s Box Office Impact the Franchise?

Today, movie studios usually only continue making sequels if each film earns a lot of money. Sometimes, even popular franchises with existing fans get canceled, and their stories are left unfinished if audiences lose interest.

Good news for fans of the 28 Years Later franchise: both 28 Years Later and its sequel, Bone Temple, were filmed at the same time. This means Bone Temple will be released relatively soon after the first film. Despite a 20-year gap since the original, 28 Years Later was well-received by critics last year, and positive early feedback for Bone Temple led the studio to quickly approve its release.

Now, people are wondering just how poorly Bone Temple needs to perform at the box office before Sony Pictures decides to postpone or cancel any future installments.
