The latest trailers for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple hint at the motives of Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell), but his actions aren’t as straightforward as they appear.
The new trailer offers horror fans a clearer look at the upcoming sequel. It shows Spike (played by Alfie Williams) joining Jimmy’s group of teenagers, who roam a ruined Britain and kill infected people purely for entertainment. They’re seen wearing tracksuits as they cause chaos.
The trailers also reveal Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) trying to heal Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), the Alpha, and hint at the infected creature’s past while on the train. The new film, The Bone Temple, definitely continues the story from 28 Years Later, but it looks like it’s exploring more complex and ambiguous themes.
Although some viewers believe the recent trailers for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple have revealed too much about Jimmy’s intentions, director Nia DaCosta and writer Alex Garland suggest there are still unexpected twists planned for the movie.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple trailer accused of “spoiling” Jimmy’s motives
After Sony released two new trailers, many fans now believe Jimmy is responsible for killing people as part of a religiously motivated cleansing.
The first trailer shows Jimmy questioning Kelson about whether he’s “Old Nick,” a reference to Satan. Jimmy then delivers a sermon to Kelson, warning him about the infected and declaring that “Old Nick unleashed demons upon the world, and humanity fell before them.”
In the international trailer, Jimmy explains that they journey across the country, looking for people to send to hell.
Fans on Reddit are debating whether the show’s trailers reveal too much about Jimmy’s reasons for his actions. One user pointed out that while the trailers cover familiar ground, this latest one actually gives away why Jimmy is doing what he does.
Honestly, it’s terrifying! From what I’ve gathered, this guy genuinely thinks the virus is some kind of biblical plague – like Satan’s demons being unleashed. And it’s driven him completely insane. He’s not just trying to survive; he’s actively hunting down other survivors and forcing young people to join his twisted group. It’s like he’s trying to send people to hell, not save them!
One viewer commented that the trailer showed too much of Jimmy’s motivations, while another wondered if it was a response to fan disappointment with how Jimmy was introduced at the end of the first season. They were just sharing their thoughts.
I’ve been thinking… what if this whole ‘good guy’ act Jimmy’s putting on is just a cover? Like, is he pretending to be some kind of hero to justify all the awful things he’s doing – the torture, the killing, everything? It makes you wonder if he’s actually the villain in disguise.
In the first movie, Spike and his dad, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), discover a man who’s been infected and is hanging upside down. The name ‘Jimmy’ is carved into his chest, and it appears someone was collecting his infected blood in a plastic bag secured around his head.
Adding to the darkness, the character of Jimmy Crystal is based on Jimmy Savile, a once-popular British TV personality later revealed as a child abuser. O’Connell’s villain is focused on violence and causing pain, and his supposed righteous mission might simply be a way for him to justify his actions in a broken world.

It’s really interesting how Kelson is trying a different approach – using drugs to basically calm down those who are infected. It seems like he might even be onto something with a possible cure! If he can actually manage to stop the infected from rampaging across the country, that could take the wind out of Jimmy’s sails. People might think twice about joining his violent crusade if there’s a chance things can be fixed without all the bloodshed.
I think Jimmy’s really going head-to-head with Kelson because he’s scared of losing his influence. But honestly, after how surprising “28 Years Later” was, I’m expecting anything to happen in “The Bone Temple” – it could go in any direction!
We’re still finding out what Jimmy intends to do with the infected, but in the meantime, you can explore a frightening idea about baby Isla in 28 Years Later, learn when Cillian Murphy is expected back for the sequel, and check out our picks for the top horror movies coming out in 2025.
