While many people think of Netflix for its popular action and romantic comedy movies, it also has a huge selection of fantasy films worth checking out. Since Netflix started creating its own shows and movies around 2015, its original content has become incredibly popular, earning high ratings and positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
Netflix offers something for everyone, with a wide variety of shows and movies across all kinds of genres. But one of its best-kept secrets is its collection of fantasy series and films. From stories about mythical beasts and magical abilities to worlds built on fantastical realism, Netflix has plenty of easy-to-enjoy fantasy options that might even win over people who don’t usually like the genre.
26. Kubo and the Two Strings
- Release Year: 2016
From the studio behind acclaimed films like Coraline, comes Kubo and the Two Strings, a visually stunning stop-motion animated adventure. The story follows Kubo, a young samurai, who must embark on a magical quest to defeat the Moon King, a powerful villain who took his eye as a baby. He’s joined on his journey by a playful snow monkey and a quirky human-beetle companion.
25. Girl Haunts Boy
- Release Year: 2024
I just finished watching Girl Haunts Boy, and it’s really stuck with me. It stars Peyton List as Bea Jenkins, a totally stylish woman from the 1920s, and while it looks like a ghost story, it’s actually a really moving film about dealing with loss. The story centers around Cole Sanchez (Michael Cimino) who moves into a haunted house after his dad passes away. Things get interesting when he puts on an old pearl ring and starts to figure out the mystery behind Bea’s death and a long-standing curse.
24. The Sea Beast
- Release Year: 2022
Netflix’s The Sea Beast begins like a classic pirate adventure, with lively ships and a terrifying monster of the deep. But when an orphaned girl stows away on a monster hunt, the creature isn’t what everyone expects. The film then challenges viewers to consider what the real monster actually is—and it’s not who (or what) they initially think.
23. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
- Release Year: 2021
Okay, so as a huge fan of The Witcher universe, I have to say Nightmare of the Wolf is seriously good – it’s got a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is amazing! It’s basically a prequel to the Netflix series, and it tells the story of Vesemir, the witcher who eventually becomes a father figure to Geralt. It really fills in a lot of backstory and explains how Vesemir became the legend we know him as.
22. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- Release Year: 2009
Based on the popular book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a hilarious and heartwarming film that’s become a favorite for families. It tells the story of Flint Lockwood, a slightly odd inventor, who figures out how to make food from water. But his amazing invention quickly leads to a big environmental problem that could affect the whole world.
21. Family Pack
- Release Year: 2024
Family Pack cleverly takes the well-known idea of people stuck inside a board game and makes it feel fresh and exciting. The Vassier family finds themselves in 1497, playing a dangerous game of Werewolf where each person’s role is determined by a card – and it’s especially tricky because the youngest child is playing the werewolf!
20. A Whisker Away
- Release Year: 2020
Released in 2020, A Whisker Away has quickly become known as one of the most touching anime movies of recent years. It centers on Miyo Sasaki, a teenager who is in love with Kento Hinode. Desperate to get his attention, she uses a magical mask that allows her to transform into a cat.
19. Hellboy
- Release Year: 2004
I’ve always been fascinated by the world of Hellboy. It’s incredible how much detail they’ve put into everything – the monsters, the magic, even the organization dedicated to studying and fighting the supernatural, the BPRD. The BPRD is where we first meet Hellboy, played by Ron Perlman, a demon himself! It’s a twist, though, because when his greatest enemy, a truly awful war criminal, comes back to life, Hellboy unexpectedly becomes our only chance at survival. It’s a really compelling story.
18. Afterlife of the Party
- Release Year: 2021
Victoria Justice has her biggest part yet in Afterlife of the Party, a fun, but somewhat overlooked, comedy. She stars as Cassie, a social butterfly who unexpectedly dies after a night out. As a result, she’s tasked with being a guardian angel and needs to reconnect with the best friend she drifted away from to make things right.
17. Once Upon a Crime
- Release Year: 2023
The movie Once Upon a Crime offers a fresh take on classic fairy tales by bringing together Little Red Riding Hood (played by Kanna Hashimoto) and Cinderella (Yuko Araki). This Japanese film features the two characters as an unexpected duo who team up to solve a murder connected to a royal ball.
