2026’s WandaVision Sequel Will Officially Change 4 Key Elements from the Original Show

Marvel Studios is creating a sequel to their popular series WandaVision, titled VisionQuest, which is set to release in 2026. While building on the original, VisionQuest will introduce some significant changes to the story. WandaVision was a groundbreaking series in 2021, launching the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and leaving a lasting impact on superhero television. Elements of its storyline are continuing to unfold in other Marvel projects, both those already released and those planned for Disney+.

The upcoming 2026 series, VisionQuest, will significantly differ from its predecessor, WandaVision (2021), in four key ways. Fans know VisionQuest will conclude a three-part story that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. While the previous shows advanced the storylines of characters like Wanda, Vision, and Agatha Harkness, VisionQuest promises a new direction for the overall saga.

TV Sitcom Format Gone for VisionQuest

WandaVision was groundbreaking for superhero stories because it told its narrative through the style of sitcoms, drawing inspiration from shows spanning the last 70 years of television. The series referenced classic programs like The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Brady Bunch, Malcolm in the Middle, and Modern Family as it followed Wanda and Vision’s time in Westview, including their journey to becoming parents.

Although VisionQuest will draw inspiration from earlier shows like WandaVision, it’s expected to tell a more straightforward story about Vision. Focusing on White Vision after his escape from Wanda Maximoff, the series should have a clear, present-day storyline, potentially making it less confusing than WandaVision.

Tommy Maximoff Has a New Actor (And Other Recast Stars)

WandaVision featured the introduction of Billy and Tommy Maximoff, Wanda and Vision’s twin sons with superpowers, played by Julian Hilliard and Jett Klyne respectively. Now, after Joe Locke took over the role of Billy in the series Agatha All Along, Ruaridh Mollica will play the older version of Tommy in the upcoming show VisionQuest.

The upcoming episodes are predicted to bring Tommy and Vision back together, possibly by transferring Vision’s consciousness into a new body – similar to how Billy Maximoff inhabited Billy Kaplan’s body in the Agatha All Along series. Although details are scarce, viewers anticipate Tommy will display his super speed powers and adopt his comic book nickname, Speed.

The new season will feature both returning and new cast members, and will interestingly portray several AI characters as people. James Spader and James D’Arcy will once again play Ultron and JARVIS, respectively. Emily Hampshire will now voice EDITH, and Orla Brady will take on the role of FRIDAY. However, Elizabeth Olsen, Kathryn Hahn, and Joe Locke are not expected to appear in this season.

New Themes Explored in VisionQuest (Trauma vs. Grief)

Throughout its nine episodes, WandaVision primarily focused on the theme of grief – a common thread in many of Marvel’s Phase 4 projects. The show followed Wanda as she coped with the loss of Vision, initially recreating a life with him and their children, and ultimately grieving their loss all over again when she couldn’t permanently have them, leading her to seek solutions in the Darkhold.

Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, explained that the core of the VisionQuest storyline is dealing with inherited emotional pain, particularly within father-son relationships. As Vision searches for his identity and purpose, he’ll confront difficult truths and grapple with his past while navigating a period of change before his eventual return.

Jac Schaeffer Not Involved in VisionQuest

Jac Schaeffer was a key creative force behind both WandaVision and Agatha All Along. She served as the writer, creator, and executive producer for WandaVision, and then returned to those roles for Agatha All Along – also directing several episodes. Her work has significantly shaped the story of Wanda Maximoff within the broader Multiverse Saga.

Although Schaeffer has a continuing relationship with Marvel Studios, she wasn’t part of the VisionQuest project, making it the only installment in this three-part story where she didn’t appear. This doesn’t reflect negatively on VisionQuest, but fans will likely miss her contribution, as she’s been a key figure in bringing this story to life for the past five years.

The new Marvel series, VisionQuest, starring Paul Bettany, James Spader, Todd Stashwick, and Faran Tahir, is coming to Disney+ this year. It’s one of several Marvel movies and shows planned for release this year, and will focus on White Vision as he explores who he is and faces familiar enemies from throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
