As a huge fan, I was really bummed when The Expanse wrapped up in 2022 – it felt like so many threads were left dangling! While Alcon Entertainment is keeping the world alive with comics and other media, it’s a bit of a letdown that we still haven’t seen the last three books in James S.A. Corey’s fantastic series brought to life on screen. I’m still hoping those stories get the adaptation they deserve!
Things could change in the future. After all, The Expanse was saved after its initial cancellation on Syfy, giving fans hope that Alcon will eventually continue the story on television. Plus, Prime Video is already working on another adaptation of James S.A. Corey’s work, The Captive’s War, which could potentially become the next big space opera series like The Expanse.
Alcon’s Next Big Sci-Fi TV Series Is Blade Runner 2099
Alcon Entertainment has been instrumental in bringing The Expanse to life, expanding it from a popular book series into a major franchise with a TV show, video games, and other media. They produced the first three seasons for Syfy and then continued the show for another three seasons on Amazon. However, The Expanse, with its unique world of Belters and intriguing mysteries, isn’t the only successful science fiction property Alcon Entertainment is involved with.
In 2011, Alcon gained the rights to the film Blade Runner, which eventually led to the successful sequel Blade Runner 2049 featuring Ryan Gosling. Now, a TV series called Blade Runner 2099 is in development, taking place 50 years after the events of the second film. This series is a collaboration between Alcon, Ridley Scott’s production company, and Amazon MGM Studios, and it’s Alcon’s first live-action science fiction TV show since The Expanse.
The Expanse’s Success Is An Encouraging Sign For Blade Runner 2099
As a huge sci-fi fan, I was thrilled with Blade Runner 2049. While it didn’t make a ton of money at the box office, it absolutely lived up to the legacy of Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner. Like what happened with The Expanse, Alcon Entertainment really understood the source material and expanded on it in a way that felt natural and kept fans like me really happy. It was a fantastic continuation of the story!
The initial response to Blade Runner 2099 is positive, which is a good start. However, making a great TV series is different than making a great movie. That’s where The Expanse comes in – Alcon Entertainment has already demonstrated its ability to create excellent, long-running science fiction shows based on established brands. If Blade Runner 2099 follows suit, it has the potential to be one of the best new shows of 2026.
Comparing the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 to The Expanse is important because the new series will significantly diverge from the original Blade Runner story. Since the show won’t have Deckard as a central character, the experience Alcon gained making The Expanse, and how that show adapted its source material for television, will be crucial to maintaining a consistent feel and keeping Blade Runner 2099 grounded in the same universe.
Blade Runner 2099 Is Picking Up Where The Expanse Left Off
Silka Luisa is developing Blade Runner 2099, and because she wasn’t involved with The Expanse, the two shows are expected to have distinct styles. However, since Alcon Entertainment is producing both, some familiar elements from The Expanse might appear in the new Blade Runner series.
This could show up in big ideas like a reluctance to change established stories, or in details like grand, impressive visuals and futuristic worlds that feel gritty and realistically aged.
With no new season of The Expanse, the upcoming series Blade Runner 2099 could be a good substitute, as it’s made by the same production company and aims for a similar feel.
