2026’s Clone Wars Sequel Will Replace the Show’s Main Character

The story of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will continue in 2026 with a new series, Maul: Shadow Lord, starring Sam Witwer. While the original show focused on key characters throughout the Clone Wars, this sequel will shift its focus to the aftermath of the war and the Emperor’s rise to power, picking up where The Bad Batch left off. It will explore a new chapter in the Star Wars universe following the events of the animated series’ finale.

In a recent interview, actor Sam Witwer shared that the new series continuing the story of Clone Wars will focus on a new lead character. At Rebel Scum Con, Witwer, who voices Darth Maul, explained that his character will take on the role of the main hero, similar to how Ahsoka Tano was featured in the original series.

“[Shadow Lord] allows us to do things that we couldn’t do before,” Witwer remarked:

Since the show’s title includes Maul, we have more creative freedom than we did previously. I had a few ideas for ‘The Clone Wars’ that I ran by Dave, and he immediately shut them down – he wasn’t a fan at all!

He explained that before, there were certain story elements he couldn’t explore while playing the character, because Clone Wars was told through Ahsoka’s eyes. Now, things are different—this new story is all about Maul.

He explained that certain story paths weren’t possible because the story was being told from Ahsoka’s point of view, not Maul’s. He hadn’t initially considered a series focused on Maul, so when that changed, they started brainstorming ideas specifically for a Maul-centric show, exploring his character and motivations in more depth.

Throughout the seven seasons of Clone Wars, Ashley Eckstein’s character, Ahsoka Tano, was the central figure. But since then, the follow-up series have shifted focus. The Bad Batch highlights Clone Force 99, while Star Wars: Rebels centers around Ezra Bridger.

Although the comic series Maul: Shadow Lord primarily centers on Darth Maul, it’s been positioned as a continuation of the Clone Wars story. It features the same visual style as the original animated series and picks up Maul’s story after the events of Clone Wars Season 7.

The upcoming Disney+ series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will feature Sam Witwer reprising his role as the Sith Lord Maul. The show will explore how Maul navigates the galaxy after the fall of the Jedi and is expected to premiere in 2026.

What Putting Maul in the Spotlight Means for Star Wars?

Focusing on Maul, a popular Star Wars villain created by Sam Witwer, could lead to exciting new stories for the franchise after the events of The Clone Wars.

Although The Clone Wars wasn’t consistently lighthearted throughout its seven seasons, the Shadow Lord arc, with its intense focus on the suffering of Darth Maul, enables a significantly more somber and dramatic narrative.

Witwer explains the upcoming series is set in the Star Wars universe, but depicts a time when much of its vibrancy is fading. The story will focus on Maul as he questions the true meaning of his efforts during the Clone Wars, wondering if the galaxy he fought for is what he envisioned.

Given this setup, Shadow Lord appears to be a more personal story, delving into Maul’s character rather than a grand, galaxy-spanning conflict or a major new addition to the Star Wars universe.
