The Academy Awards nominations were announced Thursday morning. While many of the nominees were expected, some surprising omissions caught people’s attention.
Ryan Coogler’s historical vampire film, Sinners, achieved a remarkable feat by receiving 16 nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay – a rare accomplishment for films in this genre. One Battle After Another, despite underperforming at the box office, also earned a significant 13 nominations and was considered a strong Oscar hopeful. Frankenstein garnered nine nominations, though surprisingly, director Guillermo del Toro wasn’t nominated for Best Director.

Honestly, some of the biggest snubs really surprised me. I was shocked that Wicked didn’t get any nominations. So many people, myself included, thought Ariana Grande had a good shot at Best Supporting Actress, and the movie seemed like a lock for nods in categories like Original Song, Production Design, and Costume Design. It’s just… a complete shutout, which is pretty disappointing.

Dwayne Johnson, despite attempting to establish himself as a serious dramatic actor with The Smashing Machine, didn’t receive any acting nominations. The film only received recognition for its makeup and hairstyling. Likewise, Sydney Sweeney’s performance in the biopic Christy wasn’t nominated for any awards.
