Determined to secure her family’s future, Rebekka focuses on finding a husband for her eldest daughter, Elvira, and will stop at nothing to make her presentable for the royal ball. This isn’t your typical Cinderella story. “The Ugly Stepsister” follows Elvira, who struggles to stand out next to her stunningly beautiful stepsister. The story reveals the hard work, sacrifice, and ambition it takes for Elvira to become the most beautiful at the ball.
‘The Ugly Stepsister’ Is the Best Example of the Disney/Horror Trend

Recently, a strange trend has emerged in horror films. As classic characters from childhood stories – those now in the public domain – become fair game for filmmakers, we’re seeing them reimagined as scary movie villains. Films like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, The Mouse Trap, Steamboat Willie: Blood on the Water, and Popeye the Slayer Man are examples – and they’re just as bizarre as those titles suggest.
While creating The Ugly Stepsister, Blichfeldt came up with the idea during college, but surprisingly, it wasn’t Disney’s Cinderella that inspired her. Instead, she drew inspiration from the Brothers Grimm’s original story, “Aschenputtel.” She wanted to retell the tale from the viewpoint of one of the stepsisters, and added a horror element to explore more meaningful themes. It seems she achieved her goal.
Comparing The Ugly Stepsister to other recent horror adaptations of classic stories isn’t entirely fair, but it still stands out as the best example of this Disney-meets-horror trend. Many of these new adaptations, featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan as villains, feel like simple slasher films designed to launch a franchise, and often fall into the category of ‘so bad they’re good.’ While they have a dedicated fanbase, and the trend seems likely to continue, The Ugly Stepsister remains a high point.
