2025’s Top 5 Most-Played Games On PlayStation And Xbox Are The Same As 2024’s In The US

The most played games on PlayStation and Xbox these days are typically multiplayer games that are constantly updated online – they aren’t always brand new releases, but rather games that are continually evolving.

According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, the five most popular games on PlayStation and Xbox in the US remained unchanged from 2024 to 2025. In fact, the order of those top five games on PlayStation 5 was identical to the previous year.

According to Circana’s data, the five most popular games on PlayStation 5 in the US remained the same in 2024 as they were previously: Fortnite, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto V, Roblox, and Minecraft, in that order. This ranking is based on data from a group of active players.

In the US, the most popular games on Xbox shifted slightly between 2024 and 2025. In 2025, the top five were Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA V, Minecraft, and Roblox. The year before, in 2024, Call of Duty was number one, followed by Fortnite, Minecraft, GTA V, and Roblox.

Call of Duty appears high on this list because its launcher, called COD HQ, combines several games into one place. Right now, you can access the latest release, Black Ops 7, alongside last year’s Black Ops 6, and the popular free-to-play game, Call of Duty: Warzone.

Piscatella said the takeaway here is that, “Things are a bit established at the top.”

A recent Newzoo study from 2024 revealed that in 2023, people spent 60% of their gaming time on titles that were five years old or older, such as Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, Call of Duty, Roblox, and Minecraft. This report builds upon those findings.

These games are often called “black holes” because they’re incredibly absorbing, demanding a lot of time, focus, and money, which makes it hard for new players to get established.

Popular games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox are constantly updated with fresh content, which keeps players engaged and encourages them to return and make purchases. In fact, during the recent Christmas week in the US, Fortnite was played by about a third of all PlayStation and Xbox users.
