2025’s Most Overlooked Horror Movie: Bring Her Back Deserved More Appreciation

Both Sinners and Weapons were huge successes in theaters worldwide and even received Oscar nominations. It’s great to see well-crafted horror films finally getting recognized, but it’s disappointing that another excellent horror movie from 2025 hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.

Similar to films like Sinners and Weapons, this horror movie was almost universally praised. Viewers and critics alike enjoyed its strong acting and unsettling depictions of body horror.

Despite its quality, the film didn’t receive widespread recognition and, unlike titles like Sinners and Weapons, wasn’t nominated for any major awards.

Bring Her Back Remains 2025’s Most Under-Appreciated Horror Movie

Following their successful first film, Talk to Me, the Philippou brothers released Bring Her Back. While Bring Her Back didn’t achieve the same level of commercial success as Talk to Me, many believe it showcased stronger writing and more effective horror storytelling. Talk to Me was popular for its depiction of teenage substance abuse through a metaphorical lens.

Unlike some other films, Bring Her Back is a profoundly touching story about dealing with loss and the difficulty of accepting death. The horror aspects aren’t just there for scares; they actually contribute to the story and make it even more unsettling.

Most of the actors in the movie are newcomers, which actually enhances the experience and makes the film’s shaky, found-footage style feel more realistic. Unlike Talk To Me, Bring Her Back doesn’t rely on big special effects, and that’s likely why it didn’t get as much attention.

Movies like Sinners and Weapons have rightfully earned their popularity, and Bring Her Back is just as deserving of recognition. It shouldn’t be considered a hidden gem, but rather placed alongside those other successful modern horror films.

Sally Hawkins’s Performance In Bring Her Back Was Oscar-Worthy

Although Bring Her Back didn’t connect with many viewers, it’s a shame Sally Hawkins isn’t receiving more recognition for her acting. Her character wasn’t the wildly erratic and frightening witch seen in Weapons, as Amy Madigan portrayed.

However, her performance was much more subtle, yet incredibly moving. She played a woman whose sadness and hopelessness gradually transformed into something disturbing and frightening.

Hawkins brilliantly portrayed a character who seemed gentle and kind on the surface, but was actually capable of monstrous and terrifying acts fueled by the occult. This performance, especially her ability to switch from a caring figure to a frightening manipulator so subtly, arguably made her villain even scarier than Gladys from Weapons. She deserved more praise for it.

While it’s disappointing Sally Hawkins wasn’t nominated for a major award for her work in Bring Her Back, there’s still hope the film will gain popularity and reach a similar audience as her other well-known projects, Sinners and Weapons.
